Netflix account sharing has been the main way millions of people who subscribe to the service have enjoyed the wealth of content available for years.

The company then changed its tune on sharing passwords. Announcing in 2022 that it would be cracking down on allowing the use of sharing Netflix accounts with people outside the home. These changes have steadily rolled out to users across the globe in certain regions. And now it’s finally time for US subscribers to be met with those changes. Netflix says that starting today, the changes will be implemented, and it’ll begin sending out emails to users who are sharing their account with people outside the home.

Initially it was thought that you would simply no longer be able to share your password and thereby, your account. But that isn’t quite the way things are working.

Netflix Account Sharing

Netflix received some pretty heavy backlash from subscribers after it announced the password sharing crackdowns. After all, it was openly ok with sharing your password since the beginning. Even promoting it on social media.

With these new changes, Netflix will still allow you to share your account with people outside the home. Just not for free anymore. You’ll be able to “buy an extra member” for an additional $7.99 a month. You’ll only be allowed to add one non-household member to your account, unless you have a premium account, then you’ll be able to add up to two. But each will cost you $7.99.

For those who will simply set up their own account instead, Netflix is trying to make the process simple. If you have your profile on someone else’s account, Netflix says you’ll be able to transfer it to a new membership that you pay for. These surely aren’t changes that many Netflix subscribers want to see, but they weren’t a surprise. We all knew the day was coming.
