Samsung may be readying another major camera update for the Galaxy S23 series. The said update will reportedly improve the quality of nighttime photos or low light photos in general, at least on the Ultra model. It could also fix the halo effect issue that has existed on the latest Galaxy flagships out of the box.

According to noted tipster Ice Universe, Samsung is currently testing a new firmware build for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. They have seen camera samples from the phone running this in-development firmware and found that “the photos at night have also improved”. Unfortunately, the source didn’t detail what kind of improvements we are getting, nor did they share any samples for us to look at.

Nonetheless, any improvement to the photo quality is always welcome. It remains to be seen if the entire Galaxy S23 lineup gets this improvement or if Samsung will give preferential treatment to the Ultra model. We will let you know when the company starts rolling out this update.

The new Galaxy S23 update should contain more camera improvements

The choice of wording from the tipster suggests the upcoming update for the Galaxy S23 Ultra brings more than just improved low light photos. Perhaps, as said earlier, it could also contain a fix for the halo effect issue. All the Galaxy S23 models have been producing an abnormal halo effect around subjects since day one. Subjects have a light outline across the borders, which is particularly visible in low light photos. Samsung pushed a massive camera update to the phones last month but this problem remained unpatched.

The same source confirmed a couple of weeks back that the company would fix this HDR-related issue with the May update for the Galaxy S23 series. it appears the low light photo improvements will be part of the same update. The new build number reportedly ends with “WD3,” which could be the May release. The April update for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra bore a build number ending with “WC8”. Note that build numbers often vary depending on the region and your network carrier.

As far as the rollout timeline is concerned, Samsung has already started pushing the May security patch to its Galaxy devices. The Galaxy S23 series should get it soon too. Along with the aforementioned goodies, the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release) should contain fixes for a few dozen vulnerabilities as well.
