In April, a report emerged that Samsung will equip the Galaxy Watch 6 series with a new chipset, a slightly improved version of the Exynos W920 that powers the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 4 series. The new solution was said to be called the Exynos W980. However, it looks like the company has decided to name the chipset Exynos W930 instead. Perhaps to reflect the minor improvements over the current solution.

Samsung hasn’t officially announced the Exynos W930 or even hinted at a new chip for its wearables. But the new chip has just surfaced on the Bluetooth SIG website bearing the model number S5E5515. Interestingly, the Exynos W920 also has the same model number. This suggests the new solution is nothing but a modified Exynos W920, possibly with a slightly faster CPU or some other improvement.

Launched in 2021, the Exynos W920 is a 5nm chip featuring two ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores, an ARM Mali-G68 GPU, and an integrated 4G LTE modem. The upcoming solution will seemingly keep all of this unchanged. Earlier reports said that the Galaxy Watch 6’s processor will bring a ten percent performance boost over its predecessor. It could be enabled either by Samsung’s 5nm process improvements or a higher-clocked CPU and GPU.

Unfortunately, details about the Exynos W930 are scarce at the moment. The Bluetooth SIG listing suggests that the chip was in the works for several months now but doesn’t reveal much else. The listing confirms that the new chipset supports Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi. Not that there was any doubt. It can be paired with a compatible RF (radio-frequency) chip for building a wireless communication system. We may get to know more about the Exynos W930 closer to the Galaxy Watch 6’s official launch next month.

The Galaxy Watch 6 series will debut at the end of July

While there’s no way to link the Exynos W930 with the Galaxy Watch 6 series at the moment, there’s no reason to think otherwise either. Samsung is gearing up to launch the new smartwatches at the end of July. It is readying a Classic model to go with the vanilla Galaxy Watch 6.

The former will include the company’s iconic physical rotating bezel. Both models are rumored to feature slightly bigger screens and batteries than their respective predecessors. The new watches will run Wear OS 4-based One UI Watch 5 out of the box. Wear OS 4 brings Android 13 to your wrist.
