A bigger cover display is one of the few major upgrades Samsung is making to its clamshell foldables this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a 3.4-inch squarish display on the outside, with a folder-shaped design. Rumors are that it can efficiently run some popular Android apps, including Google Maps and YouTube. The company has optimized these apps to give users the best experience possible on the cover display. It appears Samsung has also optimized One UI to allow users access to various system apps, including the camera, without unfolding the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
According to tipster Ahmed Qwaider on Twitter, the new Samsung foldable will give users access to the full camera settings on the cover display. If you want to use the rear cameras to capture selfies, you will get a full-fledged camera pp instead of just the shutter button with a few other controls. This is massive, considering that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature better cameras on the back than on the front. We are expecting two 12MP sensors above the cover display on the outside. The device features a 10MP selfie camera on the inside.
Additionally, the new Samsung foldable will allow users to lock the cover display. You can create a PIN or pattern for it. It’s unclear if users can set up different lock screens for the two displays, though. The tipster also doesn’t confirm if the external screen can be locked with biometrics such as fingerprint and facial recognition. Considering that it can run most apps, we hope Samsung has given enough thought to user privacy and security. The cover display is now almost as usable as the inner folding display, just that it’s a tad too small for some use cases.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with additional power-saving measures
Samsung has also added a power-saving measure to the Galaxy Z Flip 5. According to the new report, the foldable’s inner screen will not turn on until it’s unfolded by more than 70 degrees. The folding screen is mostly inaccessible when the device is folded below 70 degrees, so no point powering it on. Keeping it off will help save some battery power.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will arrive alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 on June 27. Leaks about the upcoming Samsung foldables have been coming more frequently in recent weeks. The frequency of these leaks will only go up from here until their launch in a month. Some of those should bring additional information about the devices. We will keep you posted accordingly.
