Google Chat is gaining Smart Compose on the web. The new feature will work alongside the existing Smart Reply feature to help you write messages “easier and faster”. It is available for messages written in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Italian languages.

Smart Compose is a machine learning-powered feature that suggests relevant contextual phrases as you type a message. It’s already available in Gmail and Google Docs. As Google puts it, this feature “saves you time by cutting back on repetitive writing”. It also helps in reducing spelling and grammatical errors. The company says the idea is to enable users to write high-quality emails and content faster.

It is now bringing this convenience to Google Chat as well. According to Google, many people “rely on Chat for their immediate communication needs while juggling competing priorities”. With Smart Compose, they will be able to “communicate with colleagues quicker to move conversations or projects forward more efficiently”. The feature will help them save both time and effort.

As said earlier, Smart Compose in Google Chat will work alongside Smart Reply. The latter feature suggests short replies based on the context of the last message. With the new addition, you can select a suggested reply and use Smart Compose to improve your response by adding more context. Support for multiple languages means it’s more accessible too.

Google is now rolling out Smart Compose to Google Chat on the web

Smart Compose in Google Chat on the web started rolling out on Monday, June 5. As usual, Google is initially pushing the new feature to users on Rapid Release domains. The company expects to complete the rollout for those users within the next couple of weeks. The rollout for Scheduled Release domains will begin on June 26 and will take about two more weeks to reach all eligible users around the world.

Speaking of eligibility, Smart Compose in Google Chat will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts. Once rolled out, it will be enabled by default. But you can manually turn off the feature from Google Chat settings (gear icon on the top right corner). Simply uncheck the “Enable predictive suggestions as you compose a message on web and desktop” box under Smart Compose. For organizations, there’s no admin control over this feature. “Smart Compose in Chat respects the user’s smart features and personalization setting,” the company states.
