Galaxy S23 users may have had to wait longer than usual for the June update, but Samsung is compensating for that with an early release of the July security patch. The latest monthly SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is rolling out to the latest Galaxy flagships in the US. Users in other markets should also get the update soon.

Samsung‘s July update for the Galaxy S23 series comes with the firmware build number S91*USQS1AWFD for the carrier-locked variants of the phones in the US. As of this writing, the company hasn’t released the update for the factory-unlocked units. But now that the floodgates are open, it should only be a matter of time before all eligible Galaxy S23 users around the world get the new SMR.

The build number for this update suggests the phones aren’t getting anything apart from this month’s security patches. Samsung’s official changelog also doesn’t mention anything else. Moreover, the OTA (over the air) file size of 425MB (at least for T-Mobile users, as reported by SamMobile) is relatively small too. So don’t expect any major user-facing changes here. The Galaxy S23 received a major update in June, and it came just a week or so ago.

The July update should patch dozens of security issues with the Galaxy S23 series

As usual, the July update for the Galaxy S23 series should contain dozens of security patches. But Samsung has yet to detail those. In fact, Google has yet to publish the content of the July 2023 Android Security Bulletin (ASB). Once the Android maker reveals those details, Samsung will publish them on its Security Updates website complete with the additional fixes that it is pushing to Galaxy devices as part of the July SMR.

We will let you know once we have that information. Meanwhile, these unknown security fixes are already rolling out to Galaxy S23 users in the US, with other markets to follow soon. As usual, you can check for updates from the Settings app on your phone. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. If you don’t see any updates today, wait a few days and check again. You may get a notification once the OTA release hits your Galaxy S23 unit.

Over the next few weeks, Samsung will update dozens of other eligible Galaxy models to the July SMR. The likes of the Galaxy S22 series and the latest foldables should get the new security patch soon. We will keep you posted with all of those rollouts.
