A couple of days back, Samsung released the July 2023 security patch for the Galaxy S23 series in the US. But the update was limited to carrier-locked variants of the latest Galaxy flagships. Thankfully, the company didn’t make unlocked users wait much longer for the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release). It’s now rolling out to them as well.

The July update for unlocked Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra in the US comes with the firmware build number S91*U1UES1AWFD (S91*USQS1AWFD for carrier-locked units). The new SMR is already available widely on pretty much every network nationwide. If a few are remaining, Samsung shouldn’t take much time to cover those.

The changelog for the unlocked Galaxy S23 trio is the same as that for the carrier-locked variants. Samsung isn’t pushing anything apart from this month’s security fixes to its latest flagships, SamMobile reports. Unfortunately, Google has yet to publish the July 2023 ASB (Android Security Bulletin). As such, we can’t confirm the number and nature of vulnerabilities fixed with the July SMR.

However, as usual, the new security patch should contain fixes for a few dozen issues, some of which could be critical flaws. Along with Android OS patches from Google and partner vendors, Samsung will also push some Galaxy-specific patches to its devices with the July SMR. Called Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE), these security flaws don’t exist in Android devices from other brands.

Note that every Galaxy device isn’t affected by all of these vulnerabilities. But a few of them exist on every model. It’s always a good idea to install the latest security patch as soon as it’s available. If you’re using a Galaxy S23 model in the US, the July SMR should be available for you anytime now. You can go to Settings > Software update and tap on Download and install to check for updates manually.

Samsung will push the July security update to more Galaxy devices

The Galaxy S23 series was the first to receive Samsung’s July update. The rollout began in the US and has yet to expand to other markets. Meanwhile, the company is slowly covering more Galaxy devices with the latest security patch. It has already released the new SMR for the Galaxy S22 series and the Galaxy A53 5G in some markets. Others will follow soon, including the latest foldables. We will keep you posted with all those updates as and when they come.
