With the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 this year, Samsung has finally given us a new hinge for the two new foldables. This new hinge does three main things: its thinner allowing the foldables to also be thinner, it allows the foldables to fold flat, and it has less moving parts. In this article, we’re going to talk about those three things, and more and why it’s such a big deal for this fifth generation of Samsung foldables.
The new Flex Hinge
The new Flex Hinge, as Samsung is calling it, is a pretty big deal for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung claims that it is the most durable hinge on any of their foldables yet. The wording there is pretty important, as Samsung is only comparing it to their own Flips and Folds that they have released, and not other foldables on the market.
This hinge offers a slimmer silhouette, allowing the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 to be thinner this year and also lighter. By it being slimmer, it allows for the foldables to also fold completely flat. Previously, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 did not fold flat and a had a relatively large gap. That is not good for a foldable, since it allows dust to get into the main display and could damage it. Even though they were dust and water resistant.
Samsung was really the only company making foldables that didn’t fold flat, until this year. Every other foldable folds basically flat. There might be a small gap, due to the caps over the bezels to keep the display from touching the other side of the display. But it’s basically flat, compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 from last year.
Less moving parts = less points of failure
This is potentially the biggest reason why this new hinge is a big deal. Samsung claims that there are now less moving parts in the hinge, making it a more streamlined construction. But the part that Samsung did not mention is that, this means fewer points of failure and it’s less likely that the hinge will break now.
Of course, you can still opt to pick up Samsung Care+ which will give you an unlimited number of fixes for your Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, for drops, spills and obviously mechanical issues.
However, the Hinge is still large enough for Samsung to stamp it’s logo on it.
