Earlier this year, there were reports that Google’s co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, had been heavily involved in Google’s AI strategy. Now, a report coming from the WSJ shows us just how much of an active role Brin has been taking in the AI future at Google.

The report states that Brin has been “visiting the tech giant’s Mountain View offices in recent months generally three to four days a week.”

Brin has been specifically working with researchers developing Gemini, which is Google DeepMind’s next-generation foundation model. It was announced at Google I/O back in May, and it’s being touted as “created from the ground up to be multimodal, highly efficient at tool and API integrations and built to enable future innovations like memory and planning.” Gemini is meant to counter what OpenAI has done with ChatGPT4. Though it’s still in training, it is expected to launch by the end of the year.

Google’s CEO is excited about Brin’s involvement

It was also revealed in this report, that Google’s CEO, Sundar Picahi is “excited about Brin’s involvement and has encouraged his contributions.” And that comes from people familiar with his thinking.

Brin has been spending his time in the Charleston East building, which is where the AI team currently sits. Pichai also has an office over there.

This is big news for Google, or rather Alphabet. But also not all that crazy. After all, Sergey Brin has been the one that is more interested in crazy things like AI. He was the one that skydived onto the Google I/O stage in Moscone, many years ago to demo Google Glass. But seeing both co-founders back taking more active roles in the AI strategy, shows just how important AI is to Google. CEO, Sundar Pichai has always seen it as a big deal, and the next big thing for Google.
