Pixel Watch is getting a second August update

Google seems to be pushing a second August update to the Pixel Watch. Several users have reported receiving a new update with the August security patch a few days after installing the latest patch. The firmware build number suggests it’s a repeat OTA (over-the-air) release of the same update from the company.

The Pixel Watch picked up the August update last week. It was a relatively minor release that brought nothing more than the latest vulnerability fixes to the first-gen Google smartwatch. The device received the build number RWDC.230805.001 and the August 5, 2023 security patch level. There were no new features or improvements in tow.

However, over the past few days, some Pixel Watch users have received another OTA update with the same changelog, build number, and security patch level. 9to5Google confirmed receiving this update on at least one Pixel Watch unit. Unsurprisingly, the publication couldn’t find any “discernible changes” upon installing the update.

As of this writing, Google hasn’t officially said anything about the latest update for the Pixel Watch. There’s no new version on the factory/OTA image page either. All of this points towards it being a repeat release of the same August update by the company, possibly mistakenly.

In theory, those shouldn’t be a problem. Your watch will go through an additional update process that it could do without, but this won’t do any harm. However, some users who had their Pixel Watch update automatically overnight found that the device failed to track their sleep. They woke up in the morning without any record of their sleep.

Unfortunately, there’s no telling whether the second August update for the Pixel Watch has a bug or if the initial release has one, nor do we have any word from Google. For the time being, you might want to avoid letting your Pixel Watch update overnight if sleep tracking is critical to you.

The September update for the Pixel Watch should be a big one

While the August update for the Pixel Watch was a minor release, and so was the July update, the wearable should get a bigger release next month. Google is expected to roll out the third quarterly feature drop for Pixel devices in September. The last feature drop came in June.

The Pixel Watch is also awaiting the Wear OS 4 update. It may not coincide with the Android 14 launch, which shouldn’t be too far off now, but the big Wear OS update should roll out before the end of this year. Stay tuned and we will keep you posted with all of these upcoming updates for the Pixel Watch.
