Samsung has begun preparations for the launch of its 2024 flagships. The company recently filed trademark applications to secure the Galaxy S24 brand name. The new phones are expected to arrive in February 2024 if not earlier.

Spotted by the Dutch all-things-Samsung publication GalaxyClub, the Korean firm filed trademark applications for the brand name “S24” at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in the UK on July 28, 2023. That’s just a couple of days after its Galaxy Unpacked event where the company launched new foldables, tablets, and smartwatches.

As usual, the UK IPO hasn’t published many details about Samsung’s “S24” trademark claim. But the “Class” section has only one product category ticked: smartphones. So if you needed further confirmation that the company is securing the brand name for its 2024 flagships and not something else, there you have it.

Of course, there aren’t any rumors of another Samsung product that goes by the name “S24.” However, it isn’t very common for the Korean behemoth to trademark the brand name for its flagship smartphones so early. We are still about six months away from the Galaxy S24 launch. The new devices should arrive in February 2024, or January at the earliest.

Despite the trademark applications coming early, the new Samsung flagships aren’t expected to debut in 2023. The company is probably getting started early and will gradually register the Galaxy S24 brand name in other regions over time. You can expect similar applications from Samsung in the US, Europe, and more markets in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung may bring back Exynos processors with the Galaxy S24

The Galaxy S24 series should bring a handful of upgrades over Samsung’s 2023 flagships. Early rumors have hinted at improved cameras, stronger build, bigger batteries, and more RAM and storage. That’s in addition to the yearly processor upgrade. The Galaxy S23 series shipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 globally, so its successors are bound to get the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

However, Samsung may not equip its 2024 flagships with the new Qualcomm processor globally. A few markets, including Europe and parts of Asia, are rumored to get the company’s in-house Exynos chipset. The Korean conglomerate is reportedly already working on the Exynos 2400 with plans to use it in Galaxy S24 flagships in some markets.

Hopefully, the new Exynos chip won’t have the same power and thermal issues as the previous one. Samsung used a Snapdragon processor in the Galaxy S23 series globally because of issues with its Exynos solutions. The company now going back to the in-house chipsets suggests it has improved things and is confident to give Qualcomm a run for its money. Whether that turns out to be the case, only time will tell.
