After having delayed Android 14 a month, it’s now starting to roll out to Google Pixel devices. The update will be available for the Google Pixel 5a and newer. That includes the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. This also means that the Pixel 5a is the only non-Tensor Pixel still being supported at this point.

Android 14 isn’t a huge user-facing update. A lot of the changes are under-the-hood, or within the privacy and security of your device. Most of the changes are going to come to your device via a Feature Update, which is also set to be on the way very soon.

One of the bigger updates in Android 14 is the change to the battery stats page in Settings. Now arguably, this is really only an issue for reviewers that need to check on battery life to report on it. But it is really nice to be able to see the screen on time right there as soon as you open the screen.

New lock screen customization

Ironically, after the iPhone started to let users customize their lock screen with different clock faces, Google decided to build that into Android 14. Now in Android 14, you can change up the clock style. This includes the way the digital clock looks and even moving to an analog clock.

There’s a few more smaller features, like removing the “ok” button when you enter your pin. So now once you finish adding your pin, it’ll automatically unlock. It might sound like a small feature, but still really nice to have. that’s one less button to press. You can also adjust your regional preferences, so that you can prefer what temperature unit to use and what day of the week is the start of the week. So if you are from the US and head to Europe, you’ll still see the weather in Fahrenheit, rather than Celsius.

As stated, Android 14 is starting to roll out to Pixel devices now. Samsung and OnePlus has already started beta programs for their version of Android 14, so those phones should get the update in the next month or so.
