Samsung‘s latest update for the Galaxy S21 FE is now rolling out widely in the US. The company started pushing the update, which brings the September 2023 security patch, to the device last week. However, the initial rollout only covered the carrier-locked units. The unlocked Galaxy S21 FE is also now getting the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release).

According to SamMobile, which first reported this rollout, the update is rolling out with the firmware build number G990U1UES9EWH2. It was G990USQS9EWI1 for the carrier-locked variants on the Galaxy S21 FE. Neither version is picking up anything more than last month’s security fixes, though. Samsung isn’t pushing any new features or improvements here. Those are reserved for the Android 14 update, which should come before the end of the year.

There are still plenty of security fixes to talk about. The September SMR for Galaxy devices patches more than 60 vulnerabilities. The majority of those are specific to Samsung devices or Samsung’s semiconductor chips, though a handful of the vulnerabilities exist on Android products from other brands as well. Google confirmed that four Android OS security flaws patched last month were critical.

As usual, not every single vulnerability exists on every Galaxy device. However, each model is vulnerable to one or more security issues. With the September update, the Galaxy S21 FE is safe from all of those flaws. If you’re using an unlocked unit in the US, the new update should reach you within the next few days if it hasn’t already. You can check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install.

More Galaxy devices are getting Samsung’s September security update

Along with a wider rollout for the Galaxy S21 FE in the US, Samsung also recently released the September SMR to a bunch of budget handsets. The Galaxy A13, Galaxy A21s, and Galaxy M02 are all receiving the latest security patch in various parts of the world. The new build numbers for these phones are A137FXXS3CWI3, A217FXXSADWI1, and M022FXXS3BWH1, respectively.

These updates will soon roll out to users globally. Meanwhile, Samsung might already be preparing to release the October security patch for eligible Galaxy devices. The Korean firm is also working on the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 upgrade, which is expected to hit the stable channel in late October. Google will release the Android 14 update for Pixel devices this Wednesday, October 4.
