Apple's first foldable device won't be an iPhone

It seems like Apple’s first foldable device won’t be an iPhone. How come? Well, based on a new report from DigiTimes, Apple is actually planning for its first foldable to be a “larger device”. This could be pointing towards an iPad, not an iPhone.

Apple’s very first foldable device likely won’t be an iPhone

Just to be clear, DigiTimes never mentioned an iPad, nor did it go into details regarding that. Apple is seemingly moving from the design to mass production plans, though. The company has allegedly been developing a foldable for five years at this point.

Don’t get too excited, however. We still don’t know when will this device see the light of day. Apple usually takes its time with new products, and especially form factors, so who knows.

A report from earlier this month, however, stated that the company’s first foldable device will land in 2027. It was mentioned that the launch could be moved up to 2026, but that’s not likely.

If that report is to be believed, we’re still years away from seeing an actual foldable product from Apple. Considering that the first one is expected to be an iPad, who knows how long we’ll have to wait for a foldable iPhone.

Apple is rumored to announce its first foldable 7-8 years after Samsung

The original Samsung Galaxy Fold launched back in February 2019. It has been five years since then, and Apple still hasn’t delivered its first foldable device, nor will it do that for another 2-3 years at least, based on reports.

If that ends up being the case, it will be 7-8 years between when Samsung launched its first foldable, to when Apple did it. To those of you familiar with Apple’s practices, this is probably not all that surprising.

Apple is doing great without a foldable device, just to be clear. Apple was the number one smartphone manufacturer last year. Not only was that the case for 2023 as a whole, but for all of its quartals too.
