Apple Vision Pro's front glass cracks overnight for two users

While the Apple Vision Pro wows the average consumer, two users with cracked screens might be hinting at things to come. The Vision Pro is, in almost all aspects, a marvel of engineering. As expected from Apple, this is virtual reality done luxuriously. It also comes with a very hefty price tag of $3,499. So, when two users reported that their Vision Pros had cracked by themselves, it caused a minor panic.

A couple of Reddit posts share similarities

Two days ago, user u/dornbirn posted on the Vision Pro subreddit about their unit having cracked. “Cracked! But Not Dropped” read the title of the post. Dornbirn then went on to explain how they left their Vision Pro with the cover on overnight and woke up to the cracked front.

The next day, user u/ContributionFar8997 also posted on the Vision Pro subreddit about the same issue. “Another Cracked Vision Pro” read the title, clearly indicating the user had seen the other post the previous day. What members of the subreddit immediately noticed was that the crack was in the exact same spot. Both cracks even spanned the same length as each other. This user also said they probably left their Vision Pro with the cover on.

AppleCare is asking for $300 to repair cracked Vision Pros

What’s really frustrating for both users is that Apple Support has told them they need to pay $300 to get their units fixed. And that’s if they have AppleCare. Without it, both individuals will have to pay $800 for a repair. This, understandably, is outrageous. As members of the subreddit point out, there was clearly some engineering fault with both units. User ChazHollywood compared the situation to when his first Xbox 360 developed the dreaded ring of death. ChazHollywood had to pay to get it fixed, but says they got a refund when Microsoft finally acknowledged it was a widespread problem.

Something similar might happen for both users who had their Vision Pros crack. The Apple Vision Pro hasn’t nearly sold enough units as the Xbox, so it can’t be said for certain if this will be a common fault. In fact, many users have returned their Vision Pros. While the situation develops, users are throwing around theories on why this might have occurred. If more units develop the same crack, it will give deeper meaning to what Apple said. That it will take the Vision Pro four revisions to reach its ideal form. It remains to be seen if Apple will waive the repair costs for both users now that the story has gained some popularity.
