Best of MWC: Motorola Adaptive Display

At MWC, Motorola showed off its weirdest concept… and we are all for it!!!

In terms of flexible screen technology, Motorola has been playing it safe. The only foldable devices it’s launched have been it Motorola Razr series of phones. However, at MWC, the company gave us a glimpse at something that’s been working on behind the curtains. Called the Adaptive Display, this will remind you of a wristband running on Android.

It resembles a phone that can bend backward into a “U” shape. Thus, you’re able to partially wrap this device around your wrist. While it looks extremely alien, the company actually has a wrist strap that you can use to secure it. So, Motorola is all set to let you use it on your wrist as a very weird-looking smartwatch.

However, this isn’t only to be worn on your wrist. The Adaptive Display can also be used on a table or desk. One example we’ve seen with using this device is setting it up in tent mode, and playing Connect Four on either side of the display. It’s a nifty idea, and it could probably come in handy during a long wait.

In any case, it doesn’t seem that Motorola is looking to create a Connect Four machine. Rather, the company is experimenting with other ways that it could use flexible screen technology. The first foldable phone came out in 2019, and affordable screens haven’t seen much innovation in the consumer market. However, it doesn’t mean that companies aren’t looking to find new ways of innovating on it.

Unfortunately, the Motorola Adaptive Display is only a concept and prototype at this point. In any case, this device truly showed us that Motorola is looking toward the future of foldable phones, and this is why it earned our award for best of MWC.
