The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been delayed according to a new rumor. For Nintendo fans who were hoping to trade up this year, that’s unfortunately going to have to be put on hold. The good news is that this is probably a good thing in the long run.

If you’ve ever been an early adopter of a next-gen console before, then you know how it can be less exciting if that console doesn’t have many fun games to play. This delayed launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 should afford Nintendo some extra time to put together a more formidable list of launch titles.

In fact, that seems to be one of the reasons Nintendo decided to delay the launch of its next console. As reported by VGC, an unnamed publishing source says Nintendo delayed the Swith 2 launch so that it “could prepare stronger first-party software for the console.” As of right now, it doesn’t seem like there are any other reasons for the delay. At least none are being reported at this time. The Nintendo Switch 2 was initially expected to be released in the latter half of 2024. Numerous rumors pegged its launch for sometime around the holiday shopping season.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been delayed until Q1 2025

By the sounds of it, consumers are looking at a delay of at least a few months. Although it’s hard to tell just how long it will be. Multiple sources are reported to have been told that Nintendo has told game publishers the console was delayed until Q1 of 2025. But Q1 lasts until March 31. So it’s possible that the console may not launch until later in the quarter.

VGC reports that development sources state they were working on games for an early 2025 release window. However, it wasn’t confirmed if this had anything to do with a console delay. Or if these were the originally planned launch dates for those games. In addition to VGC, other sources appear to be hearing similar mentions of the delayed console launch. VGC references Brazilian Journalist OX do Controle on YouTube. Eurogamer has heard from sources as well that the delay is happening.

With the delay now seemingly set in stone, the Switch 2’s release will be more in line with the launch of the original Switch. The console was launched on March 3 back in 2017. That doesn’t mean Nintendo is targeting the exact same launch date though. But it does potentially suggest Nintendo will be looking at s similar window.

Nintendo’s next console is slated to arrive with a larger display than the original. It’s also said the console will come with an LCD screen. Nintendo has already committed to supporting software on the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED well into 2024. So with this delay, it seems the company will be able to focus more on extending that console’s lifespan just a little bit.
