Have you had someone recently come to your house asking about their lost Apple device? If so, you’re not alone. There have been a lot of such reports recently where a random person comes to someone’s house asking for their lost Apple Watch, or iPhone.

A Reddit user, CalciteQ, posted on Reddit that a random lady showed up at his house asking for her lost Apple Watch. The strange part is that she wasn’t just making this claim; she was actually showing the Find My app, which indicated that the Apple Watch was inside his house. Despite thoroughly checking his house, CalciteQ couldn’t locate her watch.

CalciteQ managed to ask her to leave his house, but he mentioned that if she showed up again, he would call the police to assist her in finding her watch. Another Reddit user suggested asking her to press the “Play Sound” button in the Find My app when it indicates that the watch is inside your house.

Is this a scam or a major issue in the Find My app?

It’s easy to dismiss this as a classic scam script, where the scammer tries to gain access to your house by claiming that the Find My app shows their lost Apple device inside your home. However, this isn’t the first time such a thing has grabbed everyone’s attention.

In April 2023, Scott Schuster reported that a large number of users came to his house asking for their lost iPhones. He stated that the Find My app was saying that their lost iPhone was inside his Texas home. In reality, that was not the case. When he reached out to the Apple support team for help, he did not receive any answer as to what was causing the problem.

Many other Reddit users have also complained about the inaccuracy of the Find My app. One user commented that the Find My app showed the location of his lost iPhone 500 meters away from where he actually found it. Another user mentioned that the app would always show his iPhone inside his neighbor’s house.

Considering all these scenarios, it’s hard to say that anyone who shows up at your house claiming to have lost their Apple device is trying to scam you. It’s possible that it’s the Find My app’s fault that’s showing them the wrong location; however, that’s yet to be officially confirmed.

What should you do in such a situation?

In any case, if any such person comes to your house, you should thoroughly check your house at least once. You can also ask them to play the sound from the Find My app, which will make everything clear whether the device is actually inside your house or not. If they insist that you let them inside your house so that they can check for their lost Apple device, you should call the police to handle the situation.
