If you know or use the phrase “Google it” then you might be from the generation where searching on the Internet and using Google to search was synonymous. Before the introduction of platforms like TikTok, users used a variety of search engines like Google to fulfill all of their internet search needs.

The current technological advancement, however, has changed the playing field significantly. Social media platforms have also become a significant tool for users to search for information or news. Thanks to time constraints and personal preferences, platforms offering short videos or pictures with to-the-point captions are becoming increasingly popular.

Google is still the top search engine among Gen Z

While Gen Z is reportedly turning towards social media platforms like TikTok for their searches, Google still maintains its number 1 position among the Gen Z age group. According to data collected by Ypulse, 46% of internet users between the ages of 18 and 24 first search for things on Google. For comparison, 58% of internet users between the ages of 25 and 39 have Google as their first search option.

This data highlights the significant change in the search habits of Gen Z and millennials. Millennials primarily depend on traditional search engines and think of social media as a means of communicating with friends. Gen Z, on the other hand, has been shifting to platforms like TikTok and YouTube for their information searches.

Why the shift from Google to social media is happening

There are various reasons why this shift is occurring, and one of them is the most obvious – Gen Z has been raised with social media. Ironically, they are accustomed to social media as millennials were with Google as a search engine. This further elaborates the abovementioned point that many people, especially Gen Z, prefer watching videos over reading their information. Things like TikTok paying creators to make trending search content are major factors too.

As a business, Google needs to make money, and ads are a notable chunk of revenue. This requirement to appeal to companies that pay for ads can sometimes cause Google to censor some information. Those who want authentic news likely look for other information-gaining options.

Lastly, social media is just quicker. While Google likely gives more detailed explanations of everything, which is why even Apple thinks it’s the best search engine, social media posts are quick and snappy. Those who just want a quick information fix before moving on with their lives might find looking at social media posts more convenient.
