Gemini is finally getting an extension to connect with YouTube Music. So, the AI-powered chatbot is closer to becoming the ideal Google Assistant replacement. Now you can control the playback of your favorite music and podcasts using voice commands without having to open the YouTube Music app first.

Gemini’s YouTube Music extension finally rolling out

Today, Gemini is capable of many things, but it still has a lot to improve. There are some Google Assistant functions that are not yet supported. So, you still can’t completely discard the classic assistant if you are a regular user of these functions. For example, you could not access the content of your playlists on YouTube Music. However, that is changing, as Google is widely rolling out the YouTube Music extension for Gemini.

Extensions in Gemini allow the chatbot to access data from multiple services. This way, you can make requests that involve said data. If you already received the YouTube Music extension, you can enable it using the switch. Then, you will be able to control the playback of music and podcasts from YouTube Music.

Supported prompt formats and examples

To make things as easy as possible, Google made a list of supported prompt formats, along with practical examples. The company divides the commands according to their functionality: to search for songs/playlists, and to control playback. The list of prompt formats you can use to find content includes the following:

Find [song name] by [artist name], Find the album [album title] by [artist name], Find [genre] music, Search for songs similar to [song name] by [artist name], Find the song that goes [song lyrics], Find the [song name] music video, Start a radio based on the song [song name], Search for [artist name] songs.

Also, there is the list of prompt formats to control music playback: Play [song name] by [artist name], Play the album [album title] by [artist name], Play [genre] music, Play the [song name] music video, Start a radio based on the song [song name].

Google’s list of practical examples includes commands such as “Show some rock music”, “Turn on White Noise @YouTubeMusic”, “Play music that I like”, “Play rock music radio”, “Show me songs from modern artists keeping classic blues alive.” You can use them to guide you when making your own requests.

Some things to keep in mind

There are some things you should know. Currently, the YouTube Music extension for Gemini only works with English commands. Plus, it will work a little differently on Android and iOS. On Android, commands like “Play [song]” will start background playback directly. On the other hand, on iOS, the command will open the YouTube Music app first.
