Apple is getting ready to unveil iOS 18 in just a few weeks, and many iPhone users are excited about the new AI features coming. The company struck a deal with OpenAI to use ChatGPT to power Siri, and that should make it much smarter. However, the deal between Apple and OpenAI seems to have Microsoft worried.

To catch you up, Apple has been in talks with OpenAI about potentially using its API to power Siri. We only found out about this deal a few months ago, but the Cupertino company originally approached OpenAI last year, apparently. So, there’s a chance that this could have been in testing for months at this point.

According to 9To5Mac, there’s code alluding to Siri powered by ChatGPT hidden within iOS 17.4. So, there’s no telling just how long these features have been in production.

Previous reports stated that Apple was also considering Google for a partnership. However, with how the AI Overviews have been messing up, it seems that Apple wants to seek a more stable AI platform. So, Apple users will get the experience of using powerful AI models, and OpenAI will most likely be getting a HEFTY bonus from the deal; this is an objectively good thing… right?

Well, not everyone is loving this deal because Microsoft has its worries. As you may know, OpenAI’s models are powering Copilot. However, OpenAI needs to use Microsoft’s data centers. So, if OpenAI gets new clientele, their data will be handled in Microsoft’s data centers.

The thing is that a deal with Apple will create quite a load on Microsoft’s data centers. iOS exists on more than 2.2 billion devices around the world, and Apple is not shy about updating a ton of its older devices to the latest platform.

This is something that worried Microsoft. In fact, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, met with Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, to talk about the company’s concerns. They most likely spoke about the load on the data centers along with the fact that it will be hosting a competitor’s AI.
