One of the things keeping mobile technology back is mobile software. This is one thing that Google wants to change by bringing its desktop operating system to Android. According to a new report, Google is still working on bringing ChromeOS to Pixel devices.

If you recall, we followed news about this endeavor for quite some time. However, at some point, it became clear that Google had given up on it. What the company wants to do is be able to run ChromeOS on an Android phone via software virtualization. This is something that can open up numerous possibilities for smartphone users.

ChromeOS on Pixel devices could still happen

After we got the news that Google shelved this project, we moved on. However, it turns out that some things never die. A new post from “The man, the myth, the legend” by Mishaal Rahman shows that Google is still working on this implementation. Not only is the company looking to make it possible, it wants to make it super simple.

According to Rahman, if you want to achieve this, you have to manually compile and configure everything. Also, if your device isn’t rooted, then you can forget about it. Obviously, that’s too many hoops for most people to jump through.

Google is working on a one-tap solution to run ChromeOS. It’s developing an app with the codename “Ferrochrome launcher.” The name of the actual project is Ferrochrome. Using the launcher, you’ll be able to run ChromeOS via a virtual machine. So, you won’t need to be a tech wizard, all you’ll have to do is open an app.

Why run ChromeSO on your Android device?

So, it seems odd to use desktop software on your phone. And, you know what, it is! But, Android doesn’t only power phones. Right now, it seems that Google is only working on this for Pixel devices, and that includes the Pixel Tablet (Review). The Pixel tablet doesn’t bring a ton of productivity potential that other tablets don’t bring. It’s just an Android tablet.

Imagine being able to run ChromeOS on that device. For starters, you’ll be able to use the full version of Chrome rather than the tablet version. This could be something great for Android tablets. Many people complain about iPadOS running on iPads (which may as well be computers at this point with all of the raw processing power they have).

If Google can bring ChromeOS to Android tablets, that could be a boon for the platform.
