Every day, more and more companies are boarding the artificial intelligence train. The latest kid on the block to join the AI trend is the microcomputer maker Raspberry Pi. At this year’s Computex event, Raspberry Pi has collaborated with Hailo to bring advanced AI computing to its products. The company has introduced a new kit bundle called the Raspberry Pi AI Kit.

Thanks to this kit, everyone will be able to experiment with the world of neural networks, AI, and machine learning quite affordably.

The Raspberry Pi AI Kit is capable of providing 13 TOPs of AI computing power

The main elements of the AI kit are the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ and the Halio-8L M.2 AI accelerator module. Combined with the Raspberry Pi mini-computer, the whole setup is capable of providing 13 TOPS or Tera Operations per Second AI performance in such a small package.

Notably, the AI computing handling performance of the Raspberry kit is higher than the first-gen AMD XDNA Ryzen 7040-series devices, apart from the Intel Meteor Lake processors. AMD’s offering tops out at 10 TOPs, while Intel’s chip can reach a max of 11 TOPs. So, the Halio-8L is measurably faster than both.

This may seem considerably slower than AMD’s upcoming AI 300 (50 TOPS) chip, and Intel’s Lunar Lake (120 TOPS) processors. However, the cost of ownership of an AI PC with the Raspberry kit is only a fraction of what the upcoming AI chips from the aforementioned brands will cost.

The Hailo-8L M.2 AI acceleration module is integrated with Pi’s camera software

As per the announcement, the Hailo-8L M.2 AI acceleration module is integrated with the camera module of Raspberry Pi. It is capable of running various AI-based apps like chatbots natively on the small computer. The kit supports various “out-of-the-box apps via Hailo’s robust software suite and model zoo”. The camera devices using this hardware can be instructed to perform various AI tasks, Some of them include object identification and image recognition.

These are only some of the use-case examples of the potential of this AI technology module. Hailo will kick off an online developer community for the module. It will feature tutorials, FAQs, and other resources for creators and developers.

The Raspberry Pi AI Kit will set you back by $70. It will be available to buy from the worldwide network of Raspberry Pi-approved resellers in the near future. Notably, the Hailo module requires a PCIe connection. Thus, at the launch, only the Raspberry Pi 5 will be compatible with the kit.
