Currently, WhatsApp lets you back up your chat history to Google Drive, and that comes into play when you’re transferring to a new device. However, according to a new report, WhatsApp is working on a new chat transfer feature. It will make switching to a new device easier.

If you want to move your WhatsApp account to a new device, you need to upload your chats to Google Drive and download them on your new device. It’s a pretty simple process, but you need to remember to back up your data before transferring. If you skip that step, it could make things annoying.

WhatsApp will bring a chat transfer feature

This feature was spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (version 2.23.9.19), so you’ll want to take this news with a grain of salt. It’s only in testing at the moment. WhatsApp could yank it from production at any time.

Currently, you need to back up your chats before transferring. However, this new feature could make the act of transferring more straightforward. When you want to transfer your data to a new device, the app will generate a QR code. You’ll need to scan that QR code with the new device. Once you scan it, the chats will begin transferring between the devices. So, this feature basically cuts out the middleman.

We’re not sure what kind of technology the feature will use. Will it use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi? If there aren’t a ton of chats, then you should be fine with whatever.

This is a very useful feature to have, as the backed-up data eats into your personal Google Drive storage. There are people who choose to use the app without backing up their data. It’s a bit of a bummer having to back up the data and use your storage data just to transfer between devices. With the chat transfer feature, users will be able to forgo eating up their Drive storage and just transfer the data.
