Disney Plus will follow Netflix’s lead by implementing a password-sharing crackdown in more regions starting in September. The company had already confirmed that it was working on this measure for the near future. Now, it seems that Disney will get serious about it. Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus subscriptions will also become more expensive this year.

While it was already known that implementing a password-sharing crackdown was in Disney Plus’ plans, there was still no clear timeline for it. The company began testing the measure in June only in some countries after the announcement in February. However, nothing was yet known about the plans for its worldwide rollout.

More regions to receive Disney Plus’ password-sharing crackdown in September

Today, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke to investors during an earnings call. According to the executive, the company will begin implementing “in earnest” the paid password-sharing system starting in September. Iger did not offer further details on the matter, but his words already give an idea of the company’s intentions. Disney Plus’ password-sharing crackdown is expected to roll out to more regions and users starting that month.

It is not yet known whether the company will implement the password-sharing crackdown globally in September, or if it will continue with a gradual rollout. Iger’s statement can be interpreted in a number of ways. It’s also not known how much it will cost to add additional user profiles to your Disney Plus account. Netflix, one of the service’s direct rivals, charges a $7.99 fee for each additional user on your account.

Iger says he’s not worried about a potential backlash from people. In fact, he claims that Disney has received “no backlash at all to the [paid sharing] notifications that have gone out and to the work that we’ve already been doing.” Q2 2024 was Disney Plus’ first profitable quarter, and the company is looking to maintain that path going forward.
