Google is squeezing Gemini into just about every corner of the Google ecosystem. If you use one of the company’s services, then you’ve probably seen it in action. According to a new report, Google is rolling out free Gemini integration in the Gmail app.
The whole Google Workspace has been getting some neat AI features over the past couple of months. Google introduced the Gemini side panel to some of its products like Docs, Drive, and Sheets. If you’ve signed up for the test, then you should be able to see it. Once you summon the side panel, it will immediately summarize what’s in the document. Just like using the Gemini website, you’ll be able to type what sort of action you want Gemini to do.
The Gmail app is getting deeper Gemini integration
Gemini is no stranger to Gmail. The company has been testing the ability for Gemini to summarize long email chains. So, if you’ve been using Gmail, then you’ve probably seen this feature. However, Google is working on making Gemini a more useful tool in Gmail.
You’ll know that you have access to this tool if you see a new Gemini icon on the top right of the screen in the Gmail app. When you tap on that, you’ll see a Gemini panel rise from the bottom of the screen. Aside from the text field below, there are also some suggestions that will help you get started.
The integration is pretty deep here, as you’re able to search for emails, surface your unread emails, etc. Just like with other chatbots, you can use natural language, but your usage will be a bit limited. You won’t be able to use Gemini to perform complex actions like writing emails for you. This will mostly be for tracking down emails.
If you’re interested in trying this out, it’s a bit of a lottery. This is being delivered via a serverside update to free users running the latest beta build of Gmail. If you want a chance to try it out, you can start by joining the Gmail beta program on the Google Play Store.
