The new Pixel Studio app is powered by Imagen 3 and is available via Google’s region-locked AI Test Kitchen platform. The feature is essentially a powerful Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) that turns text prompts into images.
Is Google restricting the Pixel Studio app update with AI Test Kitchen?
The Google Pixel 9 series smartphones have been in the spotlight ever since they launched. Google also showcased several new Gen AI features, some of which could remain exclusive to the Pixel series.
The Pixel Studio app, meant primarily for the Google Pixel devices, now has a new Gen AI feature. It is not clear why, but Google hasn’t officially launched the feature around the world. However, the search giant did start rolling out a new update for the Pixel Studio app, which contains this new feature.

The Pixel Studio app on the new Pixel 9 series, limited to US users for now, is an all-purpose Gen AI image generator. Simply put, it turns text prompts into AI-generated imagery.
The third iteration of Imagen 3 (Imagen 3) powers the feature that’s inside the new Pixel Studio app and it’s available as part of the AI Test Kitchen program. Apart from generating images from text prompts, the feature can also edit them using on-device AI hardware.
Will all Android users get Google’s Gen AI image generator app?
Google revealed the Imagen 3 text-to-image generator in May. The company restricted the tool’s availability to the Vertex AI development platform. In other words, the Imagen 3 Gen AI platform was in a private preview phase, until this week.
Google has repeatedly stressed that Imagen 3 is its “highest-quality” image generator yet. The company assured it “significantly improved” the tool’s ability to understand prompts.

Use cases of Imagen 3 should extend way beyond generating images. According to Google, Imagen 3 should be able to quickly generate sketches and hi-res images too. Imagen 3 is reportedly being tweaked for other “specific tasks” as well.
There are several Gen AI text-to-image generators available on the internet. Google claims images generated by Imagen 3 offer better detail, richer lighting, and fewer artifacts than the competition.

As for Imagen 3’s availability, it is part of the Pixel Studio app, which could be a Pixel-exclusive feature. The app is currently restricted to the US, but that’s not the case for the Imagen 3 platform. Imagen 3 is currently available for all as a website.
Google may gradually unlock access to the app in other regions. Until that happens, there’s always Elon Musk’s Grok 2.
