The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC is now official. This is MediaTek’s brand new flagship processor, and it is meant to compete directly with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.
The Dimensity 9000 got announced a year ago, and it has actually proven to be an immensely powerful chip. The same goes for the Dimensity 9000 Plus chip, which rivaled the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 is a 4nm chip, and it looks great on paper
The Dimensity 9200 looks great on paper. This processor has been manufactured by TSMC, and it’s made using a 4nm process. It actually takes advantage of Arm’s latest CPU tech.
What’s interesting is that this is the very first 64-bit-only smartphone SoC. 32-bit apps won’t really work on it. All apps in the Play Store have been 64-bit for years at this point, as it’s mandatory. If you do play Flappy Bird still, for example, that won’t work here. So, some really old apps and games that are no longer in development may not work.
This is an octa-core processor. It consists out of four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, three Cortex-A715 cores running at 2.85GHz, and one Cortex-X3 core set at 3.05GHz.
It offers a 41% reduction in power consumption
The Arm Mali-G715 Immortalis MC11 GPU is used here. This GPU is actually kind of great. It offers hardware-based ray tracing, and MediaTek says there’s also a 32% boost in Manhattan 3.0 benchmark scores over its previous SoC. The company also said that you can expect a 41% reduction in power for the same performance, which sounds amazing.
MediaTek also said that this chip supports variable rate shading, Vulkan 1.3, and the HybperEngine 6.0 suite for gaming. In other words, you’re getting motion blur reduction, improved touch response, and better resource management.
The Dimensity 9200 supports display resolutions up to 240Hz for fullHD+ displays, and 144Hz for WQHD displays. The Helio M80 architecture is used on the modem side of things, while the chip supports Sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. This is actually the company’s first chip with mmWave 5G support.
The Imagiq 890 ISP is also included
The Imagiq 890 ISP (Image Signal Processor) is included here, and MediaTek says that AI can understand what’s in the foreground and the background of a scene. So, the chip can help tune the colors and various other parameters.
This chip will also help tackle blurry photos with dual stream AI shutter tech. It will use two camera streams (different exposures) and fuse them together in order to reduce blur.
MediaTek also said that the Dimensity 9200 has native support for RGBW camera sensors, and offers 12.5% power saving when recording 8K video at 30 fps with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization).
LPDDR5X is supported, as is UFS 4.0 memory
Bluetooth 5.3 is also supported, and so is LPDDR5X RAM. The same goes for UFS 4.0 flash storage, and the chip is Wi-Fi 7-ready.
The company said that the very first Dimensity 9200-powered phones will launch at the end of this year. MediaTek also said that this chip will be “more broadly available” than Dimensity 9000 chips.
