This time around, we’re comparing the Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Both of these phones launched fairly recently. Well, the global variant of the Huawei P50 Pro, the original arrived in mid-2021. In any case, these are the best phones Huawei and Samsung have to offer at the moment. These two phones are considerably different in pretty much every way, though, so it will be interesting to compare them.
They offer considerably different designs this time around, one includes Google services, the other one doesn’t, and so on. It will surely be interesting to go step-by-step and see the differences. We’ll kick things off by listing their specs, and will then shift to design, display, performance, battery, camera, and audio categories. That being said, let’s start the Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comparison.

Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Design
Both of these phones include curved displays, and a centered display camera hole. They’re also both made out of metal and glass, but that’s basically where similarities end. The Huawei P50 Pro has considerably more rounded corners, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra has flat top and bottom sides. Both phones are proportional (front to back), but in a different way, as their shapes are quite a bit different. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is completely rounded on the sides, while the Huawei P50 Pro has a pronounced frame.
The Huawei P50 Pro comes with a dedicated camera island, which has two circles inside, both of which host the phone’s cameras and sensors. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has separate camera modules that protrude out of its body, and they’re already proving to be dust magnets. Both setups look nice, though. Brand markings are present on the back of each phone, and that’s basically it.
Now, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is considerably taller, wider, and a bit thicker than the Huawei P50 Pro. It’s even a lot heavier than the Huawei P50 Pro, as it weighs 228/229 grams, compared to 195 grams of the Huawei P50 Pro. Both phones are quite slippery, so using a case is definitely recommended. It’s also worth noting that the Galaxy S22 Ultra ships with an included S Pen. The S Pen silo is placed at the bottom, towards the right side. Both phones feel extremely premium in the hand, even though the in-hand feel is completely different.
Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Display
The Huawei P50 Pro features a 6.6-inch 2700 x 1228 OLED display. That panel is curved, and it offers a 120Hz refresh rate. This phone’s display offers support for 1 billion colors, and it has a PPI of approximately 450. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, features a 6.8-inch 3088 x 1440 display, which is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus+. That is a curved Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This is an LTPO panel, and it supports HDR10+ content. This display also gets brighter than the Huawei P50 Pro panel quite a bit so, at 1,750 nits of peak brightness. This panel has a PPI of around 500.
Now, the Huawei P50 Pro’s display does get plenty bright, but its peak brightness is not that close to what Samsung’s flagship offers. You’ll be able to reach that brightness only in auto mode, though, so keep that in mind. Brightness in manual mode peaks at around 1,300 nits. That being said, both of these displays are excellent, to say the least. Not only do they offer really punchy, vivid colors, but they’re plenty sharp, and offer great viewing angles as well.
Both displays are also really good when it comes to touch response rate, and are a joy to use. You’ll feel the curve on both panels, so if you don’t like curved displays, well, these two may not be for you. If you don’t mind them, the two panels truly are great. The Galaxy S22 Ultra technically has a better display, but in real-life use, they’re really close one to the other. These are great displays.
Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Performance
The Huawei P50 Pro comes equipped with the Snapdragon 888 SoC. The Galaxy S22 Ultra comes in two SoC variants, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200 options. So, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has newer chips, and is technically more powerful, but the Snapdragon 888 is a proven, excellent processor. It was Qualcomm’s flagship until recently. One thing to note, though, is that the Huawei P50 Pro does not offer 5G connectivity, unlike the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
If you run benchmarking apps, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will show somewhat better results, due to newer and more powerful chips. In real-life use, though, the two phones perform similarly well. Both shine during regular tasks, such as opening and closing apps, multimedia, multitasking, browsing, and so on. They’re also great when it comes to gaming, though do note that both phones do get quite warm during longer gaming sessions, especially with more demanding games. They never got too hot to handle, though.
You likely won’t encounter lag on either phone, only an occasional hiccup is possible. Both companies managed to polish out their software offerings. Though, do note that the Huawei P50 Pro comes without Google services. You’re getting Huawei’s services, with its own app store. You can install APKs thanks to Huawei’s Petal Search as well (those that are not included inside AppGallery), which will track them down on app repositories. Still, it’s a different process than simply having a Play Store available. Do note that Google apps will be out of your reach, though.
Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Battery
The Huawei P50 Pro comes with a 4,360mAh battery. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the flip side, has a 5,000mAh pack. The Galaxy S22 Ultra does have a larger display, though, which is also a bit sharper. Does all that balance out battery life, though? Well, not entirely, but both offer good battery life. Do note that you may get significantly different results, though, as our usage and location are different.
That being said, we were able to get to 7 hours of screen-on-time with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, though it was usually closer to 6.5 hours. The Huawei P50 Pro was able to get us past the 6-hour mark, and even up to 6.5 hours at times. The Galaxy S22 Ultra did feel like it offers a bit more juice, though, even though not a lot. The Galaxy S21 Ultra offered slightly better battery life, but both are great in that regard.
What about charging, though? Well, both of these phones do offer fast charging. The Huawei P50 Pro supports 66W fast wired, and 50W fast wireless charging. The Galaxy S22 Ultra supports 45W fast wired, and 15W wireless charging, in addition to 5W Wireless PowerShare aka reverse wireless charging. Do note that the Galaxy S22 Ultra does not ship with a charging brick at all, while the Huawei P50 Pro includes a 66W charger.
Huawei P50 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: Cameras
Both of these companies did so many right things with the camera offerings on these two phones. Both phones include four cameras on the back, and two on the front. Both feature a periscope camera in addition to wide and ultrawide ones. The fourth camera on the P50 Pro is a black and white one, for details, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra includes a regular telephoto camera in addition to the three we’ve mentioned.
When it comes to camera quality, these are some of the best camera smartphones in the market. We’ve recently reviewed both phones, and we’re really happy with the camera results. Both phones perform really well in both daylight, and nighttime, though the results are different. They both have issues with flares from street lights at night, at times, but that’s more or less the major downside.
They both produce highly-detailed pictures during the day, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s pop a bit more. The details are there, and the colors are vibrant as well. Both phones do a great job with foliage, and offer great dynamic range. The Galaxy S22 Ultra does a bit better job with images that include human or dog hair, when we talk about portrait shots of sorts. Ultrawide cameras are great on both, and do their best to keep a similar color temperature to the main camera.
When it comes to low light shots, the results are vastly different between the two phones. The Galaxy S22 Ultra provides darker images, but more realistic ones, on purpose. Shots taken with the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the dark will actually look like you took them in the dark, but will be detailed, and offer low noise. The Huawei P50 Pro images turn out brighter, and a bit towards the unrealistic side, but great nonetheless. It’s a thing of preference.
Both phones offer crazy zoom capabilities thanks to their periscope cameras. Those are really good only during the day, though, as expected. The Galaxy S22 Ultra does a better job at really far zooms, but up to 10-20x, both are similarly great.
Audio
Both the Huawei P50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra come with a set of stereo speakers. The two companies included the main speaker at the bottom. The P50 Pro includes its secondary speaker at the top, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a front-facing secondary speaker. Both sets of speakers sound really good. They’re loud enough, and the sound coming out of them is rich enough. The Galaxy S22 Ultra seems like it has slightly more depth, but the difference is not that bit, at all. Neither phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, by the way.
