There are quite a few compelling clamshell foldables available in the market at the moment. Some of the newest ones come from Samsung and Xiaomi. We’re here to compare those two devices, the Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip. Xiaomi MIX Flip (China only, for now)
Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip: Design
The Motorola Razr+ 2024 is made out of aluminum and vegan leather, well, for the most part. Some color options have slightly different backplates. The Xiaomi MIX Flip combines an aluminum frame with a glass back. Both smartphones have a centered display camera hole at the top of their main panels. The bezels around those displays are quite thin. The Xiaomi MIX Flip has a flat frame all around, while that is not the case with the Motorola Razr+ 2024.
Their backplates also have different shapes. The one on the Motorola Razr+ 2024 is curved towards the sides, but the one on the Xiaomi MIX Flip is curved on all sides, it basically protrudes a bit as an island of sorts. It’s not easy to explain, but it does make for a slightly different in-hand feel. Speaking of which, the Motorola Razr+ 2024 is the less slippery of the two, mainly due to the materials the company used on the back.
Both phones have rather large cover displays. Both of them span all around the main cameras. The cameras on the Motorola Razr+ 2024 are horizontally aligned, while they’re vertically laid out on the Xiaomi MIX Flip. Motorola’s handset is slightly taller, while the two phones are the same in terms of width. They’re also very similar when it comes to thickness and weight. The weight difference is from 1 to 3 grams, depending on the model. Only the Motorola Razr+ 2024 has an IP rating for water resistance, it has the IPX8 rating. Both phones have good hinges and feel really nice in the hand.
Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip: Display
The Motorola Razr+ 2024 includes a 6.9-inch fullHD+ (2640 x 1080) main display. That is a foldable LTPO AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. This display can project up to 1 billion colors and supports Dolby Vision. HDR10+ content is also supported, while the brightness goes up to 3,000 nits. The screen-to-body ratio is at around 85%. The cover display on the phone measures 4 inches. It’s an LTPO AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1272 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. This display can also project up to 1 billion colors and supports Dolby Vision. HDR10+ content is also supported, while its peak brightness is 2,400 nits. Gorilla Glass Victus protects the phone’s cover panel.
The Xiaomi MIX Flip, on the other hand, has a 6.86-inch 2912 x 1224 panel. This is a foldable LTPO AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It can show up to 1 billion colors, and Dolby Vision is also supported. HDR10+ content support is also on offer, while the peak brightness of this panel is 3,000 nits. The screen-to-body ratio is at around 87%. The cover display on the phone measures 4 inches, and it’s an AMOLED display with a resolution of 1392 x 1208 pixels. Dolby Vision is supported here too, as is HDR10+ content. This display goes up to 120Hz too, and its maximum brightness is 3,000 nits. Scratch/drop-resistant glass protects this panel.
As you can see, all four displays look great on paper. They translate that to real-life use too, actually. All four displays are vivid, sharp, and have great viewing angles. They also offer great touch response. The creases on the main panels are less visible than on the Galaxy Z Flip 6, though the Motorola Razr+ 2024 has a slight advantage in that regard. All displays are also bright enough, even in direct sunlight. There’s really not much to complain about here, you’ll be getting an excellent set of displays regardless of which phone you end up buying.
Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip: Performance
The Motorola Razr+ 2024 is fueled by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip. That is Qualcomm’s 4nm processor, but it’s not as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It’s not far from it either, though. The device also offers 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage. The Xiaomi MIX Flip, on the other hand, is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, and it offers up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage. The Xiaomi MIX Flip could end up offering different configurations once it launches globally, though.
In any case, both of these smartphones are more than powerful enough, on paper. They do a great job in day-to-day use for opening apps, multitasking, browsing, multimedia consumption, and anything else you can think of, well, other than gaming, we’ll talk about that separately. You don’t have to worry about them being fluid or anything like that, lag is not a part of the experience, not at all. They both do a great job.
Gaming is a different story, however. For games that are not too graphically demanding, both are great. The thing is, the Xiaomi MIX Flip has proven to have some issues with graphically demanding titles, at least based on initial tests. The phone starts to throttle both CPU and GPU, and gets very hot with such titles, even during shorter gaming sessions. We do hope that Xiaomi can do something about this moving forward via an update.
Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip: Battery
Motorola’s handset has a 4,000mAh battery on the inside. The Xiaomi MIX Flip, on the flip side, includes a 4,780mAh battery pack. Despite the fact they’re on par in many ways, even when it comes to display sizes, one would not expect such a battery capacity difference, and yet here we are. Xiaomi managed to include a much larger battery without adding bulk to the phone in any way.
Does this mean the Xiaomi MIX Flip offers better battery life, though? Well, not necessarily. From what we’ve seen, the two smartphones are somewhat similar in terms of battery life. Both of them can cross that 7-hour screen-on-time mark, and they have been showing similar numbers, actually. Perhaps Xiaomi can do some additional optimizations that will prolong its battery life, as one would expect with such a large unit. Both phones will deliver very good battery life, though. Your mileage could, of course, vary, but both are very good in that department.
What about charging? Well, the Xiaomi MIX Flip does charge faster, but the Motorola Razr+ 2024 has more charging options. The Motorola Razr+ 2024 supports 45W wired, 15W wireless, and 5W reverse wired charging. The Xiaomi MIX Flip supports 67W wired charging only. One thing to note is that Motorola’s handset does not come with a charger. The Xiaomi MIX Flip does, however.
Motorola Razr+ 2024 vs Xiaomi MIX Flip: Cameras
Both of these devices have two cameras on the back. The Motorola Razr+ 2024 features a 50-megapixel main camera, and a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter (2x optical zoom). The Xiaomi MIX Flip, on the other hand, has a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel telemacro unit (2x optical zoom). It’s rather interesting that both OEMs opted for telephoto cameras instead of using ultrawide units on the back.
Are the cameras any good, though? Well, yes, actually. Motorola’s new flip phone flagship brings a considerable improvement compared to last year. Still, it’s a level below the Xiaomi MIX Flip. Xiaomi did a great job with the cameras on the MIX Flip, and Leica helped. It’s the more reliable shooter of the two, even though the Motorola Razr+ 2024 is not far off. During the day, both smartphones shoot detailed and vivid images, though the ones from the Xiaomi MIX Flip look closer to real life, especially with the Leica Authentic mode.
In the nighttime, the Xiaomi MIX Flip controls light flares a bit better, and the images do look a bit more balanced, but the difference is not as big as you may think. Telephoto cameras are good, but 2x optical zoom doesn’t give you much versatility, unfortunately. They both do a great job with portraits, while the Xiaomi MIX Flip does a better job with macro photography. You’ll be using its telephoto camera for that purpose.
Audio
You’ll find a set of stereo speakers on both of these smartphones. The thing is, the speakers on the Motorola Razr+ 2024 are noticeably louder, punchier while maintaining the quality. The ones on the Xiaomi MIX Flip are not bad at all, they’re actually quite good, but Motorola’s handset takes the cake.
Neither phone has an audio jack, unfortunately. You can still use your wired headphones, but you’ll need to connect them to the Type-C port at the bottom of each device. If you prefer wireless audio, both of these smartphones offer Bluetooth 5.4.
