Samsung has been impressive with software support and updates over the past couple of years. Supporting their devices even longer than Google supports its own devices. And that’s going to continue with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 this year.
Both new foldables from Samsung are guaranteed to get four generations of One UI updates. Now that is a pretty interesting way to word it, instead of saying four years. This means that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 will get One UI 6, 7, 8 and 9. That means that is should get updated to Android 17. Which is really good to see.
Now on the security front, Samsung says that you are guaranteed five years of security updates. So there’s that.
Both of these are above what Google is offering on its own foldable. Google is promising three years of OS updates and five years of security updates for the Pixel Fold. Which puts it at getting Android 16, and not Android 17. Very interesting indeed.
Samsung is quick to roll out updates
While the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 are launching on Android 13 with One UI 5.1.1, it will be getting Android 14 with One UI 6 very soon. In fact, Samsung is preparing to start the beta program for One UI 6 on the Galaxy S23 and a few other devices. So it wouldn’t be to surprising to see it launch ahead of the holidays on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5.
Over recent years, Samsung has actually been beating Google to putting out updates to its devices. Samsung will typically release the monthly security update before Google even announces it. Which is rather crazy, especially when you think about how slow Samsung was with updates just a couple of years ago. But this means that when you buy a Samsung phone, you can rest assured that it will get the proper software support it deserves.
