The PlayStation 5, referred to by most as the PS5, is Sony’s next-gen console headed to store shelves and doorsteps (for those that secured pre-orders) later this year.

There are still some things that are unknown about the PS5, such as what the UI looks like, whether or not your PS Plus subscription will carry over, and how many games will be available for the console by year’s end. But for the most part everything that could be outed about the console has been made officially public by Sony.

In this guide we’ll break down everything there is to know about the PS5, at least in regards to what information is currently out there. Which is quite a bit at this point.

When does the PS5 launch?

The PS5 will release on November 12 in the US and a few other global regions. This includes Mexico, South Korea, Canada, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The rest of the world will be able to purchase it on November 19.

The console is currently available for pre-order at various retail partners, and direct from Sony. However it’s unlikely that there’s any stock left of the console as many retailers sold out within 20 minutes of the pre-orders going live.

Some retailers may get more stock though prior to the console’s release date. Most retailers will also have stock of the PS5 on-hand for release day so there will still be chances to get the console on the day that it comes out.

How much does the PS5 cost?

That cost of the console depends on which version of it you buy. There will be two versions of the PS5.

There’s the standard PS5, and then the PS5 Digital Edition that doesn’t come with a disc drive. If you go for the PS5, then it retails for $499. If you decide on the PS5 Digital Edition then you’ll end up paying $399.

This is of course assuming you don’t spend any extra money on games or additional accessories. Which many consumers are sure to do.

What do you get with the console?

Inside the box you’ll get the console itself, your power adapter and cable, one DualSense controller, an HDMI cable, and a copy of Astro’s Playroom.

Since there aren’t any bundles of the console that have been produced yet, the contents of the package will be just the basics. Anything you want on top of these things has to be purchased separately.

What accessories are there for the PS5?

PS5 Pulse 3D Headset

From Sony there are a handful. And they’re all available for pre-order right now alongside the console. Though, the accessories are probably still in stock where the PS5 is not at this time.

In regards to the Sony accessories, there’s the HD Camera, the additional DualSense controllers, the Pulse 3D wireless headset, the Media Remote, and the DualSense charging dock.

All of these can be found at various retail partners including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and more. There are also going to be accessories available from other brands. Such as SteelSeries with its new Arctis 9 wireless headset that is designed for use with both PS5 and PC.

What games are available for the PS5 at launch?

There will be a small number of games available to play on the PS5 on launch day, but throughout the rest of the year and the beginning of next year there will be more released in Sony’s “launch window,” which is still technically considered launch by the company.

On release day, the PS5 will have 12 confirmed games to play. This includes Astro’s Playroom, Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Destruction Allstars, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Godfall, Observer: System Redux, Fortnite, Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (technically this counts, but it officially releases on November 13), and Just Dance 2021.

You’ll also get access to the PS Plus Collection on launch day, which has a ton of different top PS4 games in it at no cost. This includes God Of War, Final Fantasy XV, Batman: Arkham Knight, Battlefield 1, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Fallout 4, Days Gone, Detroit: Become Human, Infamous Second Sun, Monster Hunter World, Persona 5, Until Dawn, Mortal Kombat X, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Ratchet and Clank, The Last Guardian, and The Last Of Us Remastered.

Other games available within the launch window include Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs Legion, NBA 2K21, Override 2: Ultraman Deluxe Edition, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, and likely more.

There are a ton of games listed on retail sites with December 31 as the release date. So while that likely is just a place holder date for those titles, chances are they will launch soon after or sometime before and will still be considered within Sony’s PS5 launch window.

There’s also a chance that more games will be confirmed in the future as coming at some point during this time period.

What are the main features of the console?

PS5 Features

The big features that Sony has been promoting are 3D sound, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers from its DualSense. All three of which are designed to immerse you into the world of whatever game you’re playing as much as humanly possible on a console at this time.

The PS5 will also support frame rates at up to 120fps with 120fps output, 4K TV gaming with support for resolutions up to 8K (you’ll need an 8K TV for that and a game which supports that resolution), a super fast SSD for quick load times, Ray Tracing, HDR technology, backwards compatibility for most PS4 games, game boost, and the ability to upgrade some of your PS4 games to digital PS5 games.

Many headsets should support 3D AudioTech on the PS5 at launch

Good news for anyone who is looking at buying the new Pulse 3D headset from Sony but may already have a headset. Sony has confirmed that many compatible headsets will support the 3D AudioTech on the PS5 at launch.

Which means you won’t necessarily need to buy the Pulse 3D wireless headset to take advantage of one of the PS5’s headlining features.

That should save you some money. And instead you can either actually save that money, or put it towards another game for your library. Either way, This is a big boost to anyone that already has a headset that will work for the PS5.

Granted, you’ll still want to make sure that your headset is compatible with the 3D AudioTech. Because it may not be. Sony does mention that many players will be able to though.

It also notes that to experience the 3D audio, users will need to plug the headset into the console through USB, or directly into the DualSense controller. This should exclude headsets like the SteelSeries Arctis 9 which connect via a USB transmitter. In the case of headsets like this one, you should still be able to use the headset wirelessly and get the 3D Audio benefits.

How much will the games cost?

Based on pre-order listings of some of the games that are already live, it seems like the norm will start to become $70 per game. At least for the bigger titles.

Demon’s Souls for example is $70. Chances are other big AAA titles will be the same. Though not all of them. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PS5 is still $60 for the standard edition. The main price for many games that released during the PS4 era.

So pricing is going to be a mix and match here. That being said, we’ll reiterate that $70 is likely to start becoming the new normal. So expect that to be the case in the future. Even if it takes a little while to get there.

What are the specs?

The PS5 is Sony’s most powerful console and is a pretty big leap forward from the PS4. It comes running on eight Zen 2 3.5GHz cores with variable frequency. It’s also running an AMD RDNA 2 GPU 36 clocked at 2.3GHz with 10.28 TFLOPS of power.

It has 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, an 825GB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD for game storage, an NVMe SSD slot for expandable storage, and HDMI 2.1 for the display output.

Everything on the Digital Edition is the same, except it doesn’t have the 4K UHD Blu-ray disc drive of the standard model.

Both models will also come with one USB-A port on the front alongside one USB-C port, two USB-A ports on the back, an ethernet port, and the console supports Wi-Fi 5.

Sony uses liquid metal to keep the PS5 cool during use

On October 7 Sony revealed the PS5’s internal hardware during a teardown video. One of the biggest revelations was that Sony is using a liquid metal cooling technology to keep the console temperature down during use.

This should help the PS5 perform better for longer. And according to Sony it implemented this technology because it’s a more long-term stable cooling tech.

Sony says it took them two full years to develop it. While the console itself took five years to design and develop. In addition to the liquid metal cooling tech, Sony also revealed components like the PS5’s giant dual-sided intake fan.

And that the console has dust catchers, which you can vacuum out when they need to be cleaned. Sony also confirmed that the side panels of the console can be easily removed. Which is how you get to the dust catchers.

Sony gave a first-look at the console’s UI, and there’s lots of big improvements

PS5 Home Screen UI

Sony finally gave consumers a look at the PS5 UI on October 15, and it comes with some sweeping changes that are really going to make using the console an enjoyable experience.

Of the most notable, the PlayStation Store is completely integrated into the system. With the PS4 it was a standalone app. So when you launched it you had to pause whatever other app you were already in. You won’t need to do that on the PS5. The console is also much more powerful than the PS4, which will help with the speed of moving through the store to browse for new games and other content.

That isn’t the only big change though. The UI in general is quite a bit different from the PS4. Games and media for example are split up into their own sections on the home screen. Instead of everything just being displayed in one long rolling carousel of apps.

Other smaller changes include picture-in-picture mode for Game Help tips (which are also new) and shared screens of live gameplay from friends. Beyond all that there’s actually quite a few new things about the UI. You can read about most of those changes in our longer post about the UI here.

Burger King is giving away 1,000 PS5 consoles

 

It’s no secret that getting a hold of the PS5 during its pre-order phase has been a nightmare for some.

Sony had a clear plan to go live with pre-orders at a specific time, and its retail partners didn’t exactly follow that plan. Fear not though. Because whether you’re going to try and brave the crowds on launch day or not, there’s still another way to get a hold of a PS5.

Burger King is officially giving away 1,000 of them to anyone that enters its recently announced contest. To enter, you need to buy a 2 for $5 combo at a participating location.

Rules state though, that Burger King won’t be announcing the winners of the contest until after the PS5 officially launches. So if you do happen to win and get the console through this method, it unfortunately won’t be showing up on launch day.

The minor bits

How big is the console?

It’s big. By and large much bigger than any other console out there past and present. Here’s a diagram below showing comparison sizes with other consoles and TV display sizes.

Basically, don’t expect it to fit just anywhere. You may have to adjust your setup to make room for it.

 

Do I need a 4K or 8K TV to play games?

No. While Sony maintains that the best experiences will be available on a 4K TV (on its 8K TVs once they’re available, though they won’t be cheap), you can play your PS5 games on a 1080p TV or monitor if that’s what you have.

Games will still look crisp and high fidelity with plenty of rich color. In short they’ll still look awesome and you’ll still have fun playing them.

Are games backwards compatible?

Sony has confirmed that PS4 games are backwards compatible and you will be able to play your PS4 discs in your PS5 if you got the version with the disc drive.

Not all games were tested though, so some may not work. However you should be fine for most games. Anything from the PS3, PS2, and PS1 will not be backwards compatible.

Also worth mentioning is that Sony hasn’t confirmed yet whether or not PS4 digital games can be downloaded to the PS5. Though it would be weird if Sony didn’t allow this.

Can I transfer my save data?

The best answer for this is probably yes and no. Since the PS5 will support PS4 discs, and probably PS4 digital saves, any save data should be there for the PS4 versions of those games. Though Sony has not yet confirmed this.

When it comes to save data between PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game, it will not be transferrable. As an example, you won’t be able to transfer the save data from the PS4 version of Yakuza: Like A Dragon to the PS5 version.

Can I use my DualShock 4 controllers with the PS5?

For PS4 games, yes. For PS5 games, no.

The PS Remote Play Android app already supports the PS5

If you were hoping to use Remote Play on the PS5 right at launch, you’re in luck. Because Sony updated the Android app earlier this week and it now supports the PS5.

Which means you should be able to play PS5 games remotely from your Android phone on launch day. if you want to.

Many streaming TV apps will be available on the PS5 at launch

Today Sony confirmed that there will be a handful of streaming TV and media apps that will be available on the PS5 on day one.

This includes Netflix, YouTube, Crunchyroll, Spotify, Disney+ and others. On top of that the media remote will have dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and Disney+.

This means you can easily get to those media apps with just a click. Or a few for those that don’t have dedicated buttons. Assuming you grab the Media Remote that is.

Even without the remote, you can use the DualSense controller to pause, play, and manage your media whether you’re watching a TV show or listening to music. The Media Remote simply makes it easier.

Aftermarket Faceplates are here to customize your PS5 console

Right at the tail end of last week, a discovery was made that aftermarket custom faceplates for the PS5 were now a thing and you could already pre-order them.

They come from a company called PlateStation 5 and their whole existence is based on letting you swap out the faceplates of the console.

Because Sony is only offering the console in white and not a matte black. So, PlateStation 5 was born. In addition to the matte black color, there are a few more to choose from, and the plates will run you about $40. They should also ship and arrive by launch day of the console according to the company.

Play your Android games with a DualSense controller

PlateStation 5 wasn’t the only PS5 news from October 23. An unboxing of the DualSense controller showed up on YouTube, where it was tested for use with mobile devices as well as on the pS4 and on PC.

While it didn’t work as well for the latter two, it worked almost flawlessly with Android. Which means if your DualShock 4 is getting a little long in the tooth for your mobile games, you can replace that with the DualSense controller instead.

Sony and PlayStation are partnering with Travis Scott

A lot of celebrities are gamers. Likely a lot more than you may realize. Travis Scott is one of those people and according to a blog post from Sony, he’s an avid PlayStation fan.

Sony’s revelation of this fact led them to seek out a discussion in hopes of collaborating with him. And those discussions apparently went well. Because last week Sony put out an official PS5 ad with Travis Scott on its PlayStation YouTube channel.

Since then there hasn’t been much detail on what the collaboration will produce. But it will be between PlayStation and Scott’s Cactus Jack brand. Fans of both PlayStation and Scott’s music can likely expect apparel to be a part of the deal. Though it probably won’t stop there.

Sony shares all the details on the PS Plus Collection for PS5 owners

There’s not a whole lot that players were missing when Sony announced this, but on October 28 it opened up a bit more about the collection and gave all the details you could ever need about it.

Games will be claimable as long as you have an active PS Plus subscription. And once claimed you can install them on the console at your leisure.

All titles in the collection will also be available on launch day of the PS5.

Sony has redesigned the PlayStation app to make better use of the PS5

If you’ve not launched the PlayStation app on your phone recently, you should take a quick peek at it. Sony has redesigned the app from the ground up and it includes a whole new UI as well as multiple new features.

For example, party chat and messages are now being lumped into the PlayStation app and the standalone messages app is being deprecated.

In addition to that the PlayStation app’s chat features supports voice chat too. All your communication can be done from this app. There are other worthy changes. Ones that will likely make people utilize more than ever before.

Make sure to grab a free adapter to use your PSVR with PS5

The old PlayStation camera that was required to use the PSVR with PS4, is not compatible with PS5. Not on its own anyway.

Sony announced that it would need an adapter to work. And you’ll have to use that old camera with the PS5 as the new HD Camera is not compatible with PSVR.

The good news, is that Sony is giving away those adapters for free. So all you have to do is request one and Sony will ship one out to you. Easy peezy. If you currently own a PSVR and are getting a PS5, don’t forget to do this.
