Ebrahim Azizi, the head of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, says on Iranian state TV that this was the first wave of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' attacks.

He says Israeli “military centres and facilities were our targets, but the attacks might have lead to civilians being hit as well due to possible miscalculations”.

Azizi says if Israel “makes a mistake” again, there is going to be a second wave which will be “even more destructive”.

He adds that according to Iran’s assessments, Israel “cannot retaliate” to Iran’s attack tonight.

    Breaking

Let's return now to our headline story.

In an update, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says approximately 180 missiles were fired from Iran towards Israel.

An Israeli security official says most of these missiles were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force in cooperation with the US Air Forces Central Command.

Several hits were identified and the damage from those hits is currently being assessed, they say.

Moving away briefly from the Iranian missile attacks on Israel, in a separate incident, there has been a mass shooting in Tel Aviv.

Gunmen opened fire at people on a city street this evening, according to police, with Israeli media reporting that at least six people were killed.

At least seven others were reported to have been injured, and several are in a critical condition.

Images posted on social media showed the gunman shooting at bystanders and injured people lying on the ground at a railway station in the Jaffa area.

Police say two attackers were "neutralised" and describe the motive as "terror".

Israel will now be tempted to retaliate against Iran with far greater force than it did back in April.

At that time, following a volley of around 300 Iranian missiles and drones, launched in response to an Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus, there was a concerted international diplomatic effort to restrain Israel from reacting too forcefully.

In the end, Israel carried out a minor but symbolic missile attack on a target close to Iran’s nuclear facilities. It caused little damage but showed Iran it had the reach.

This time may well be different. Israel sees its recent actions around the region as both a deterrent to its enemies and the elimination of the threats it has been facing.

Just as Iran felt it had to respond to the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July and of the Hezbollah leader in September, Israel is unlikely to take this direct attack from Iran lying down.

Its targets could range from Iran’s nuclear facilities to IRGC bases to the launch sites and storage depots from where Tuesday’s missile attack were fired from.

Tehran has confirmed it's launched dozens of missiles at Israel and warned of additional attacks if Israel retaliates.

We don't know much more about the specific weapons fired at Israel at this stage, but we have this graphic detailing the range of missiles in Iran's arsenal.

US assessing scale of Iran's attack on Israelpublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 1 October

    Tom Bateman
Reporting from the US State Department

There is a sharp sense of urgency here inside the US State Department as officials have just delayed a scheduled public briefing and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has cancelled public comments he was about to make at a separate event.

Clearly here they are watching and assessing the scale of this Iranian aerial attack on Israel.

This one has come with far less warning than Iran’s missile and drone strikes on Israel in April. How well the US and its allies are currently able to bolster Israel’s aerial defences remains to be seen, with the attack still ongoing.

The effectiveness of defence will be a key element in determining where this crisis goes next. The White House had said it was ready to defend Israel and that there would be severe consequences for Iran for a direct military attack on Israel.

Officials here in Washington had been signalling to Tehran that this time, they won’t be expending the energy they did before to try to rein in any Israeli retaliation.

  11. No reports of serious injuries yet - emergency servicespublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 1 October

Reiterating part of the latest IDF statement, Israel's emergency services say there are currently there are no reports of serious injuries following Iran's missile attack on Israel.

A spokesperson for Magen David Adom (MDA) says emergency medical technicians and paramedics have been deployed to search "several sites where reports of rocket strikes have been received".

"Currently, there are no reports of injuries from the fire towards Israel, except for two light injuries from shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area and some minor injuries nationwide while moving to safe spaces, as well as cases of anxiety."

Further updates will be provided as necessary, they add.

We're hearing now from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Daniel Hagari, speaking minutes after the military said Israelis were now permitted to leave protected areas.

"We are on high alert both defensively and offensively. We will defend the citizens of the State of Israel. This attack will have consequences. We have plans, and we will operate at the place and time we decide," he says.

"We are not aware of any casualties; this is thanks to your responsible conduct," he adds.

Unless Iran is planning to launch another salvo of missiles, it seems that tonight’s attack is over.

The Israeli authorities have told people that they can now leave their bomb shelters. The Israeli Airport Authority says that the country’s airspace has reopened.

Social media has been flooded with images of missiles raining down on central Israel, with many of them being intercepted.

But some clearly landed too, triggering huge explosions.

Emergency services have been sent to several sites, but so far there are no reports of injuries.

The missile barrage was watched in the Gaza Strip and on the West Bank, with some Palestinians celebrating at the spectacle of Israel under attack.

    Alice Cuddy
    Reporting from Jerusalem

Here in the BBC’s Jerusalem bureau we’ve headed for shelter in the safe room like others across Israel, as missiles are launched from Iran.

Outside we can hear sirens sounding and frequent booms as missiles are intercepted by the Iron Dome.

We all received messages on our phones as Israel detected the launches saying: “Emergency alert. You must enter a protected area immediately and remain there until further notice”, from the home front command.

The contents of the message is labelled as “life-saving instructions”.

  17. Families run for shelter as missiles light up skies over northern Israelpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 1 October

    Nick Beake
    Reporting from northern Israel

Here in northern Israel, in the past half an hour, we’ve seen the distinctive orange glow of multiple missiles passing overhead.

We’re near to where the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched its invasion into Lebanon last night, and Israeli families have been running to shelters. It’s a scene that’s been repeated across the country.

It’s unclear whether this is the latest barrage of Hezbollah rockets fired from inside Lebanon or, in fact, missiles launched from Iran.

In our shelter, the adults are glued to their phones monitoring apps and other rockets alerts. While the children - oblivious to this significant moment in this currently Middle East crisis - play on the floor.

  19. Iran says dozens of missiles launched towards Israelpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 1 October
    Breaking

    Caroline Hawley
    Diplomatic correspondent

Iranian state TV has carried a statement from the IRGC (lslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) confirming "dozens" of missiles have been launched towards Israel, and threatening another attack if Israel responds.

The powerful Revolutionary Guards describes the missile strike as retaliation for the assassination in July of the Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, as well as the Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, on Friday - and for the killing of Lebanese and Palestinian people.

It said its air force had targeted “important bases” and would announce the details later.

  20. Israel issues 'life-saving' instructions to civilianspublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 1 October

The Israeli home front command has sent text messages containing "life-saving instructions" to people in certain areas of Israel, directing them to enter protected spaces.

In a video statement, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari tells people to reach the safest protected space in their vicinity and await further instructions.

Israel's air defense system is "fully operational", he adds. It is detecting and intercepting threats "even at this moment", he says.

He tells Israeli citizens to "remain vigilant" and follow safety instructions.

"We are strong and can handle this event," he says, adding that the IDF will "continue to do everything necessary to protect the civilians of Israel".
