A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernising at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and offers fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.
This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.
With a choice of shopping centres and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.
Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.
Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

The view of the buildings from the Bund across the river at night is a must. The metro is easy to use and very affordable. Suggest booking accommodation within walking distance of any metro stop. Eating out at regular Chinese restaurants is inexpensive and good.

Shanghai is a large city, and a lot of places to visit.
Shanghai is a large city, and a lot of places to visit. We took the Bus Tour (Hop-on-off bus) to get an overview of the city centre. Aside from the stops of popular points of interest, we visited the 上海書城,田子坊,上海大劇院。Unlike many other international large cities we visited, we feel safe to explore this city on our own.

This was my third time in Shanghai so I aimed for places I had never seen like the Shanghai Tower, view from the observation deck was super. I also visited both Shanghai Museums, many rooms in the old one were closed yet it was busy due to the special Egyptian treasures exhibit. The New one in Pudong was worth seeing. Jing'an Temple is another spot that should be on one's to see list, it's right next to the subway. Too bad it's surrounded by modern buildings and their hustle and bustle. More and more difficult to find older districts as they are being replaced by modern buildings and stores. Their extensive subway system can get you to almost all corners of the city, it's extremely convenient, however, due to it's size, passengers may have to walk a long way from one platform to another when one changes trains, or just getting in and out of the subway, it can be tiring. Platforms and trains are very clean, no garbage in sight, streets too in general. Shanghainese in general are well behaved, those who aren't are usually workers or visitors from smaller cities.

This hotel is just the best place where you can stay very close to everything in Shanghai… you have metro stations, walking and exercising streets, the bund is pretty close… the are is perfect is quite for rest, and a lot secure. I just loved this place. You got a small kiosk on ground where you can find everything… the personal was incredible kind and helpful…. I will stay here again if I get the chance…. The apartment is a lot spacious…. Cuddles 🥰 for everything…. Thanks 🙏
I stayed here as it was close to Shanghai Pudong Airport. After the small entrance the large area of the hotel on the third floor was a surprise. One big plus for me is that the hotel was not kept a a silly high temperature, room was 16 degrees on arrival but was quickly brought up to 20, much better than starting at 24 -26 degrees and then struggling to get it down because Air Con is set to heat only in November.
Anting Villa is one of the best hotels we have ever visited.
We liked the following:
- service. High professional, friendly, and solving any of our issues
- location.. convenient to see Shanghai, not far from the metro and the French concession sightseeing
- room facilities and design of the interior
Many thanks to the Manager of the hotel for high-quality service!
The location is prefect for seeing Shanghai (including the Jing'an Temple which can be seen from your hotel room) with an underground station literally around the corner with two lines to choose from. Only a short walk away from the French Concession area, full of great bars & restaurants.
A strongly recommended place to stay if you want a genuine Shanghai French Concession experience! Nice rooms, lots of atmosphere, and very friendly staff. The hotel is in a side street, so a bit more difficult to find, but it also means no traffic noise.
