Towa Bird Doesn't Need "Permission" To Be Exactly Who She Is And Admits That Her Peers In The "Lesbian Renaissance" Are "So Sexy"

"It's true. The rumours are true."

Towa Bird's debut album American Hero offers an intimate glimpse into her life and relationships in her twenties. Each song narrates a story deeply influenced by her Filipino-British heritage and her experiences as a lesbian navigating the complexities of life.

Influenced by classic rock icons of the 60s and 70s, Bird set out to create the "catchiest guitar riffs" that'll have listeners singing and chanting every note.

As for her songwriting, the "Sorry Sorry" artist found the balance between anger, tenderness and vulnerability by simply ✨standing on business✨. "I grew up in countries where it's not legal to get married to someone of the same sex. I think it further influenced me and encouraged me to continue to be that voice of activism in a way," Bird told BuzzFeed Australia.

No matter the skill, Towa's path from TikTok sensation to mainstage regular was filled with doubts.

"I think that especially in pop music, it can sometimes feel a little same-y," Bird mentioned hesitantly, not wanting to sound "insulting".

"I always wonder, you know, 'Is there space for me as someone who is mixed or is queer or is a woman?'" she said of existing at the intersections of different identities. "But no one has tried to stop me yet, so I'm just going to keep going and then see what happens."

Confident in her path, Bird emphasised that she never needed "permission" to be herself — whether in her career choices, challenging cultural norms, or coming out.

"I don't think anyone really gave me permission to do that. I feel like I found that myself," she claimed. "I fear no one. I don't know why."

This iconic behaviour has inducted Towa onto a long list of 'It' girls currently leading what the Internet has dubbed "The Lesbian Renaissance". To this, she said: "It feels so cool to be a part of something that is much bigger than me."

"Clearly, there is a huge cultural movement happening, but also I get to be a part of this really exciting thing and ride this wave of excellence, and I feel like my cohort — my peers are so sexy."
