I've worked in admin for a long time, and have to say it's completely normal for admins to be viewed 'lesser than'. In a lot of jobs you can't even take bathroom breaks without tracking down and begging colleagues to cover your desk. It's so demeaning.

You're an admin assistant, who they hired to work at the front desk - unless I am missing something I don't see why you would think you can move into an office? But your boss could have definitely handled that better.
