General overview

Salzburg is divided into 119 municipalities, including 1 city with own statute, 10 other towns/cities (Stadtgemeinden) and 24 market-towns (Marktgemeinden). They all have their own municipal coat-of-arms, some of them of quite ancient age, most of them adopted or at least re-adopted after WW 1, though. As many of the coats-of-arms have been granted
between the wars, their heraldic quality and in particular the blazonings are somewhat doubtful in several cases.

In contrast to most other Austrian states, municipal colours (for the flag) have never been officially introduced with any involvement of the state archives. Only the capital Salzburg does mention its colours (white-red) in the statute.

Therefore, most of the municipalities use the Salzburg state colours (red-white) with the municipal arms as their flag. Only 13 municipalities do use other colour combinations, i.e. own colours derived from the arms:
Bad Gastein, Berndorf, Bischofshofen, Bürmoos, Dorfbeuern, Elixhausen, Goldegg, MauterndorfOberndorf, Salzburg, Stuhlfelden, Zederhaus, Zell am See.
These flags showing own municipal colours usually show the arms as well; only three municipalities (Bischofshofen, Mauterndorf, Salzburg) use versions without the arms, too.

As common to Austrian and most German states, municipal flags are usually vertical in Salzburg. That means that all the usual vertical types used in Austria do occur.
The internationally common type of flag, the horizontal flag, is very rarely used for municipal flags in Salzburg. There are only four municipalities that use this flag type (usually in addition to the vertical types), namely Lend, Oberndorf, Salzburg and Wals-Siezenheim.

Project Status

I have achieved some, but not really much, progress in the research of  the Salzburg municipal flags over the last 1.5 years.
The sources for the progress were: photos by Stefan Schwoon, own photos, photos ferretted on the WWW and a few replies from the municipalities.

Out of 119 municipalities

  • I have sent information and drawings, in all cases based on flag photos, of 104 (87%)
  • I have sent preliminary information without drawings, of 8 (7%);
  • I have sent information that they do not have a flag, of 3 (3%);
  • I do not have any information at all about the flag, not even if they have one or not, of 4 (3%).
