Foreign interference in the 2024 European elections

Question for written answer  E-001354/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Benoît Lutgen (PPE)

Between 6 and 9 June 2024, EU citizens will elect their representatives to the European Parliament. In some Member States, such as Belgium, these elections will be combined with other votes. The EU institutions and the governments of the Member States have called on citizens to be vigilant to the risks of interference in the electoral process by hostile powers such as Russia or China. Similarly, measures have been adopted by the various authorities to ensure that the process runs smoothly, particularly given the risk of cyber attacks.

After the elections, there will be a need to review the preventive measures and the public’s response to them, any informational, cyber or other attacks that may have occurred, and the reactions and responses to those attacks. Lessons will also need to be learned and, where appropriate, new measures proposed.
