25 Accessibility Features

We've documented 25 accessibility features for Caravan SandWitch, including Low Pressure, No Quick Reactions, No Button Combos, No Repeated Pressing and No Holds. Its accessibility is strongest in Controls and Navigation but it also has features in Reading, Visual, Getting Started and Audio to reduce unintended barriers.

This report is created with input from accessibility experts and the player community to help people find games that have the accessibility features they require. Once you have found potential games on the database, there are excellent specialist accessibility sites that offer in-depth reviews to guide your purchasing decisions.

Caravan SandWitch is an adventure game where you play a young woman on a search for her missing sister in a dreamy post-apocalypse world where survivors live in harmony with the natural world. You explore in your van searching for scrap and clues about your sister. It stands out for the unusual approach to an open-world adventure where the emphasis is on road trip adventuring and gentle narrative rather than spectacle or fighting.

Our accessibility examiner, Ben Kendall, first checked Caravan SandWitch accessibility 4 months ago.

NotesAccessibility Notes

There is no combat in the game, so quick reactions are not needed. You can choose between controlling your van using the triggers to accelerate and brake, or using a stick to do so. You automatically climb over small obstacles without having to press the jump button. You can remap keyboard and mouse but not a controller.

Text is high in contrast and the UI can be increased in size, but not to a point where text is greater than 1/20th of screen height in all instances.

While you are given clear objectives and navigating to them using the minimap is fairly straightforward, once you get to the objective location what to do is not always made totally clear.

There is a button you can press which sends out a sonar-style pulse, highlighting with a white circle and a stereo audio cue the position of any interactive objects.

Getting StartedGetting Started

We've documented 2 accessibility features for Getting Started in Caravan SandWitch which deal with what support is offered to get started with the game. This includes customising the experience when you first open the game via any onboarding processes it provides as well as tutorials and other assistance when you first start playing.

Assistance Getting Starting

These features aid your play of the game in terms of cognitive load on learning controls, dealing with pressure and coping with the environment and challenges.

Reaction-Time Not Critical: Individual game actions don’t need quick reactions, or there are settings to lower the requirement for quick reactions. This means you don't need to quickly press a button in response to an on-screen prompt, target a fast-moving target or skillfully complete a scenario against the clock.

Low Pressure: Game tasks aren't time-limited or there's a low-pressure mode. This avoids the pressure of being put on the clock for overarching missions, or failing tasks because you didn't reach a destination in time.

Reading Level

How much reading is required to play the game's main path or story and how complex the language is. The presence of voiced characters doesn't reduce this requirement, as it's recorded as a separate datapoint.

Simple Minimal Reading: Minimal reading is required. The quantity and complexity of reading are at a level that a primary/elementary student (9-year-old) could understand.

Text Visibility

High Contrast Text: Text colour contrasts to the background or can be adjusted to be. The text in menus, instructions and other information is presented in high contrast with a solid background.

All Speech Subtitled (Or No Speech In Game): All spoken content has subtitles, or there is no speech in the game. This means there is no requirement to hear spoken dialogue or narrative to play the game.

Audible Directional Cues: Additional in-game audio cues that indicate where to go next and how close you are to arriving. This is offered as a sonar-style ping with positional/stereo audio and volume to guide you in the right direction. This is useful for blind players.

Head-Up Display

Adjust Head-Up Display: Resize and adjust the content of the head-up display. This enables it to be made more visible. It can also enable the removal of too much information that can be distracting or confusing.

Game Map: View a map of the game world during play, with the landscape, points of interest and missions highlighted throughout the entire game. This enables the orientation of the player and the world, confirming a direction of movement and the location of destinations or points of exploration.
