India pulled off a sensational seven-run win against South Africa in a gripping T20 World Cup final on Saturday (29 June). India won their second T20 World Cup but this is their first world title in 13 years.

South Africa, playing their first ever final of an ICC tournament, needed a run-a-ball 30 to win on the back of Heinrich Klaasen’s belligerent 52 off 27 balls.

But India’s seamers roared back in the death overs to restrict them at 169/8. From 30 needed in 30 balls, the requation came down to 16 from six balls.

In the last over, with David Miller in the middle on 21 from 16 balls, Proteas needed to go hammer and tongs. Hardik Pandya was tasked to prevent the big-scoring South African from eclipsing that target.

After his dreadful campaign for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians, that seemed to be a bold move but one that made sense considering how well he had bowled in the tournament.

On the first ball, he bowled a wide full toss which was smacked down the ground which made good contact but not well enough to take Suryakumar Yadav out of the equation. The India batter ran across from wide long-off, clutched on to the ball with both hands, toppling over the rope as he went, kept his feet inside the rope and lobbed the ball back into play and back into his own hands!

As expected, the catch was checked for its validity and it was confirmed to be safe as India celebrated in what was game-set-and-match.

Five balls later, India could officially celebrate a job well done with raw emotions on display especially after the disappointment of the ODI World Cup final last year.
