A Montagu's Harrier in flight over the grasslands

A migratory raptor from Central Asia, Eastern Europe that winters in India. They are quite similar to the Pallid Harriers and both these birds are often seen together and even hunt in the same habitat - grasslands. The prey base is also quite similar. There are some differences in the way they hunt and the speed of flight, but those are hard to decipher and requires a bit of observation (less photography) to conclude.

A group of birders discovered a new grassland right next to an old grasslands, but these are much elevated and are on top of a small hill - a plateau infact. The light is fantastic here and the hills are undulating and full of grass - something that the harriers love and supports prey base like the grasshoppers, pipits and larks. These raptors are seen hunting here throughout the day unlike the older grasslands which is quite dusty and has heavy truck movement involved in sand mining.
