Monopoly Go, Scopely’s mobile version of the 90-year-old board game owned by Hasbro
“In partnership with us, Scopely created a super fun and engaging game that is breaking records in a highly competitive market — it’s one of the only mobile titles in history to earn $1 billion in under a year,” said Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks in a release.
The game has been downloaded more than 100 million times since its April debut, Scopely and Hasbro said in a release. It’s been collecting more than $200 million a month in rent, er, revenue from “millions of players” in 120 countries since launch. In that time, the game’s players have:
- passed go more than 40 billion times;
- sent more than 150 million friend invites;
- completed nearly 2 billion games;
- gone to jail 6 billion times.
Monopoly Go is hardly the first game to quickly hit $1 billion, though it’s more common for titles built for console and PC play. Activision
This year’s version, Modern Warfare III, may have a tougher road to similar riches, given a poor critical response after its debut earlier this month. Nonetheless, the game’s newest edition still topped sales charts on Steam, the United Kingdom and elsewhere in its first week of release.
Some mobile titles have hit the billion-dollar mark over the past several years as the sector continues to grow in power and revenues, though Scopely cited data.ai figures to assert that none had reached that level as fast as Monopoly Go.
Scopely had previously created mobile versions of Hasbro stalwarts Yahtzee and Scrabble, and a Nerf-themed variant on Stumble Guys. Cocks said the title’s success “further validates our digital licensing strategy.”
