The old Osterreichring was one of those circuits that often threw up unusual races, and none was more spectacularly unusual than the 1975 Austrian Grand Prix where the victorious Vittorio Brambilla celebrated in his characteristic style.

March – the rambunctious team founded late in 1969 by Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Robin Herd and Graham Coaker – had burst insouciantly on to the F1 scene in 1970, also ambitiously running cars in F2, F3, Formula Ford and the Can-Am. Jackie Stewart had won the Spanish GP in Ken Tyrrell’s 701, but victory for works driver Chris Amon proved elusive. By 1975 their fortunes were waning.
