12 Monkeys Crossover Coming To Star Trek: Picard?
12 Monkeys and Star Trek: Picard don’t have a lot in common, one is about the post-apocalypse and the other is about hope for a better future, but they do share a showrunner teasing at a subtle crossover. Reporting out of Syfy indicates that showrunner Terry Matalas may give in to fan demand and bring Todd Stashwick, star of 12 Monkeys, into the Star Trek franchise as a new ship captain. For four seasons, Stashwick played Deacon, a gang leader in the ecologically devastated world of the future.
12 Monkeys ran from 2018 to 2018 on SyFy, building off of the world introduced in the Brad Pitt/Bruce Willis classic film from 1995. The television adaptation starred Aaron Stamford in the James Cole role played by Joseph Melito in the original, and Amanda School, taking over Dr. Reily from Madeline Stowe. Star Trek has already dealt with time travel and alternate universes, which gives the show the unique ability to bring in other franchises in a way that makes sense.
Even if there is no 12 Monkeys reunion on Star Trek: Picard, the upcoming season will bring its own Trek reunions on-screen. Joining Patrick Stewart this season are Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Voyager’s Jeri Ryan Jean Luc-Picard has already been put through the wringer in the first two seasons, but season 3 promises to be the biggest one yet, promising lasting repercussions for the crew of the Enterprise.
Showrunner Matalas, in addition to teasing 12 Monkeys joining Star Trek, has also teased the upcoming season of Picard will continue Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s epic story. Details are under wraps, though fans already know the show’s villains are connected to the 90’s shows, and Michael Dorn’s Worf is coming back. The former Enterprise Security Officer played a major role during the Dominion War in the later seasons of Deep Space Nine, promising deep lore pulls from past Star Trek shows.
If Todd Stashwick does make the leap from 12 Monkey’s dystopia to Star Trek’s far future, it will have to be this season, which is Picard’s last. The streaming series has been well-received by fans, despite a controversial end to the first season. Airing in the United States exclusively on Paramount+, Picard had a large marketing push behind it for the first season, which paid off amazingly well for CBS.
Just as 12 Monkeys helped bolster the faltering SyFy Network, at the time of Picard’s premiere, CBS All Access was struggling. Patrick Stewart’s return to his most famous role helped the fledgling service set a new record, that being most new subscriber’s in a single month. The week of Picard’s premiere had the second most new subscriber’s in a single week.
The 12 Monkeys showrunner brings Star Trek: Picard to a close early next year, with the final season airing on February 16th. A new episode will go up on Paramount+ every week, for the next 10 weeks. All four seasons of 12 Monkeys is available to stream on Hulu.
