Dystopian Sci-Fi Epic On Max Is The Perfect Movie Night

By Britta DeVore | Updated

With the weekend finally upon us, the time has come to sit back, relax, and watch a movie or two. This one’s for the sci-fi lovers out there, as there’s never been a better time to be a George Miller fan because both Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Mad Max: Fury Road are streaming on Max. From the comfort of your own home, you can watch the movies as the filmmaker intended, starting with the backstory of the titular character in Furiosa before moving on to her journey with Max in Fury Road.

The Recent Prequel

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga came out earlier this year and was largely met with mixed reviews from critics. Still, the movie, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the leading role as the tough dystopian broad known as Furiosa, sets up the character’s life and the string of events that happened for her path to cross with Max’s in Mad Max: Fury Road. We see her young life in The Green Place, the fate that befalls her mother, and her youthful years living under two dictators, Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), all of which play major roles in the woman she becomes.

One Movie Rolls Into The Other

Mad Max: Fury Road is so perfectly set up by Furiosa that you can roll right into it as the final moments set up the sequel’s storyline. Now a grown woman, played by Charlize Theron, Fury Road follows the character as she tries to help Immortan Joe’s (Hugh Keays-Byrne) young wives escape captivity. An incredibly knowledgeable driver (something that we see her become in the prequel film), Furiosa uses her war machine, wit, and bravery to abscond with the women and bring them to the Green Place.

Of course, when Immortan Joe discovers what’s happened, he and his War Boys depart the Citadel in their own souped-up vehicles and raise hell. Along the way, Furiosa encounters Max (Tom Hardy), who makes the mistake of crossing Immortan Joe. Together, Mad Max and Furiosa drive down the Fury Road in search of their own happiness and to bring safety to the young women.

The Action-Packed Fury Road

The 2015 action-packed blockbuster served as the fourth installment in George Miller’s Mad Max franchise, which was first made popular in 1979. The first three movies saw Mel Gibson in the role of the leading man, with Mad Max: Fury Road arriving in theaters three full decades after the third edition.

Saved The Franchise

Upon its release, Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the biggest hits of the late spring and early summer, and by the time it left theaters, it had raked in an impressive $380.4 million against its $154.6-185.2 million production budget. It seemed obvious that Warner Bros. would want to greenlight a follow-up as soon as possible, and eventually, Furiosa was given the go-ahead. Miller would later reveal that the creative team on Fury Road had already put together two prequels that better helped them flesh out Furiosa and Max.

REVIEW SCORE

Sadly, due to Furiosa’s box office earnings and lackluster reception, it doesn’t seem likely that Max will get his pre-Mad Max: Fury Road story told. However, from the costumes to the set design, the pulse-pounding music, top-notch acting, visual effects, and edge-of-your-seat action sequences, Mad Max: Fury Road is an absolutely must-watch for anyone who subscribes to Max.
