Port Said

Port Said in Egypt is geographically isolated, situated on a low, sandy ground west of the Suez Canal and east of Lake Manzila. The city has 400,000 inhabitants, situated on the Mediterranean Sea, and at the northern end of the Suez Canal. The economical base of Port Said is fishing and industries like chemicals, processed food, and cigarettes. Port Said is also an important harbour both for exports of Egyptian products like cotton and rice, but also a fuelling station for ships that pass through the Suez Canal. Port Said also thrives on being a duty-free port, as well as a summer resort for Egyptians. Port Said is in many ways Egypt's most beautiful city. There are numerous old houses with grand balconies on all floors, giving the city a distinct charm. Port Said's twin city is Port Fouad, which lies on the eastern side of the canal. The two cities coexist, to the extent that there hardly is any town center in Port Fouad. The cities are connected by free ferries running all through the day.

The Port of Said is located at the Mediterranean entrance to the Suez Canal. The port is about mid-way between Alexandria, Egypt to the west and Ashdod, Israel to the east-northeast, and about 150 nmi from each. The port is situated a couple of miles west of the Port Suez bypass approach channel to the Suez Canal. The coastline in this area is unusually low and flat.

Port Said is an artificial harbor formed by two concrete breakwaters which extend seaward from the low sandy coast. The old approach channel to the Suez Canal forms the channel to Port Said. The city of Port Said is on the west side of the harbor, and the large suburb of Port Fouard is on the east side. There are a number of basins adjacent to the main channel which contain mooring buoys. The outer basin and Ismail basin provide the deepest draft. Navy vessels typically moor inside the breakwaters. A series of 4 mooring buoys are used to anchor each ship, generally two forward and two aft. There are no pier side berths available to navy ships and there is no designated fleet landing.

There are two large anchorage areas northwest of the entrance to the Suez Canal and Port Said. They are fully exposed to open seas wind and waves. Daylight navigation into Port Said is recommended. The approach zones typically hold a large number of anchored vessels awaiting passage through the canal, the low coastline provides poor radar return and currents near the seaward end of the breakwaters tend to be quite variable. Ships are advised to stay to the windward side of the channel and should not stop in the outer channel. Pilotage is compulsory. Pilots board at the seaward end of the breakwater.

Port Said port was founded at the time of digging the Suez Canal in 1869, aiming at offering services to the ship that cross the canal and to handle its goods and passengers. On April 9, 1980 Act 88 of 1980 was issued to set up the Port Said General Port authority followed by the issuance of the presidential decree 565 of 1980 that determine the specialities and responsibilities of this authority. The port, ever since, plays a leading and important role in dealing with the external egyptian and universal trading goods across the Suez Canal. The port is being incessantly developed to provide all required potentials and powers to keep up with the international development in the industry of sea-transport.

The port is located on the northern entry of the Suez Canal, on the Mediterranean Sea between latitude 31 16 degree north and longitude 32 19 degree east. It's passed by the universal commercial marine ways, which links the east and the west through the Suez Canal.
