Does this book deal with the difficulties at least initially posed by confederation rather than unoon? Lack of manufacturing infrastructure? Lack of financial resources?

The basic premise is that the Confederates won the war and the US became very much a destitute backwater. There is a cultural and historical difference throughout the entire planet. The story is primarily based around Hodge Backmaker, a historian, and his trials and tribulations.

Very well written and really believable. Believable is the key to me.
I have a slight taste for this style of alternate history fiction as of late. I read and adored Keith Roberts Pavane and though only 60 pages in also find Kingsley Amis’ The Alteration equally as good. I think I like the fact that they are both based around the European reformations never happening
My review of Pavane.

See Glenns review of The Alteration. I only got about 4 or 5 paragraphs into Glens review and stopped and decided to read the book. Did not want spoilers to ruin my reading pleasure.

Thanks Carl. I looked at some reviews of 'And End to Bugling'. If I come across this book when browsing, I sure will give it a try. Thanx again
