Angry Men Are Trying to Take Down Captain Marvel with Fake Reviews

It's 2016's Ghostbusters all over again.

Once again, men's behavior suggests they can't stand having anything in the world that wasn't explicitly designed for them. Earlier this month, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson said in an interview with Marie Claire that she noticed the press junkets for the new film were overwhelmingly white and male, so she decided to use her celebrity to ask for more interviews from women of color and other marginalized people. Now, reportedly, a bunch of men are taking this to mean Larson doesn't want white men to see the film at all, and are spamming the Rotten Tomatoes Captain Marvel page with bad reviews because of it.

The movie isn't out until March 8, yet the page is filled with negative comments. "brie larson has already said this isnt for me.i'll spend my money elsewhere," writes Kevin H. "Not interested in supporting Brie Larson's agenda," says Justin M. "Tired of all this SJW nonsense," says Jonathan B. It's clear that these "reviewers" don't have even a basic reading comprehension, but it also seems like they would have found a way to hate the film (which, reminder, they've not seen) no matter what. Sure, Captain Marvel has been a woman for a long time (the first iteration was in 1982), and she's a white, blonde woman to boot (hardly the picture of diversity), but you know they would take her modest costume or subtle makeup as a personal affront to their heterosexuality or something.

Of course, there are also "reviews" saying that the trailer looks boring or that they just want another Avengers movie. But this sort of pre-release trolling has been happening for years now, whether it's men saying the female-fronted Ghostbusters was a personal affront, or saying Black Panther was only successful "because Blacks in general have a massive inferiority complex." The trolling did nothing to hurt the popularity of those films, but it's still hurtful to the fans whose identities are being attacked. Can't wait until they make a Ms. Marvel movie with Kamala Khan!
