Dr. Kofi Antwi is a Specialty Registrar in Chemical Pathology based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary’s department of Clinical Biochemistry. He completed an MSc in Public Health and Health Services degree in 2015 at Newcastle University. His research focus was on the social determinants of health and the association between lipid biomarkers, physical activity and socioeconomic status on a population level. He further completed his MBBS at Newcastle University in 2016.

 

Presently, Dr. Antwi works in the lipid clinic at Bristol Royal Infirmary. He sees patients presenting with a wide range of lipid disorders including familial hypercholesterolaemia, metabolic and other causes of dyslipidaemia and elevated Lp(a). His particular interests include impact of diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors on dyslipidaemia and cardiovascular disease, severe hypertriglyceridaemia and its acute presentation and establishing pathways to optimise patients with prior vascular disease or at high risk of vascular disease.

Dr Mike Champion is a consultant in Paediatric Inherited Metabolic Disease. He trained in Metabolic Medicine at Guy's and Great Ormond Street Hospitals and was appointed in 1998 to establish the Paediatric IMD service at Guy's and St. Thomas'; 1 of 9 services in the UK.  
 
He has served on a number of national committees and working groups including the development and roll out of MCADD newborn screening and the later Expanded Metabolic Newborn Screening nationally. He was a member of the NHSE Metabolic Clinical Reference Group (CRG) and the Paediatric Royal College representative on the NHSE Rare Disorders Advisory Group (RDAG). 
 
He leads the Paediatric Lipid Service at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, which has included development of the apheresis service for Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolaemia with his renal colleagues.  

Prof Peter Collins

Peter Collins is Professor of Clinical Cardiology, National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, London. He studied at Caius College, University of Cambridge and St Thomas' Hospital Medical School.  He received his MD degree from the University of Cambridge, where he won the university’s Sir Walter Langdon-Brown prize for his thesis. In 1989, he joined Royal Brompton Hospital as a consultant cardiologist. In 2001, he was appointed a Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College London.

 

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, the American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology as well as a member of the British Cardiac Society and the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.

 

He is currently the Chairman of the Task Force on Gender of the European Society of Cardiology.

 

His principal clinical interests are in cardiovascular disease, and in particular coronary heart disease, intractable angina, heart failure, valvar disease, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and vascular effects of hormones in women, hyperlipidaemia.  He has been instrumental in establishing (in 1993) and running the weekly ‘Women’s Heart Clinic’ at the Royal Brompton Hospital, one of the first of its kind in the UK and Europe.

Nichola has worked as a children’s nurse at Sheffield Children’s Hospital since qualifying in 2006 at the University of Sheffield. Having spent several years working across medical and surgical specialties Nichola settled in metabolic medicine in 2019. 
 
As well as being part of the nursing team looking after general metabolic patients, Nichola has also developed a keen interest in Familial Hypercholesterolemia and am now responsible for the day to day running of the paediatric FH service.  Nichola enjoys being responsible for cascade testing, diagnosis and ongoing management of children and young people with FH and polygenic hypercholesterolaemia.   Nichola is a non medical prescriber, which allows her to see the whole process through from start to finish. 
 
Nichola’s role includes input into the care and management of all Metabolic and Lipid patients, which includes nurse led clinics, and counselling families with a new diagnosis including Metabolic patients identified through Newborn screening. 

 
Dr Charlotte Dawson

Charlotte has been a consultant in Metabolic Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham since 2012 specialising in adult inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) and lipid disorders.  
 
The Adult IMD service in Birmingham cares for about 1500 patients across the Midlands and South West England and runs more than 30 clinical trials including ‘first in man’ gene therapy trials and novel mRNA therapies. In 2022 we established Preventive Cardiology service as part of the Lipid Clinic focussing on holistic secondary prevention care of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.  
 
Charlotte is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham and a senior examiner for the Royal College of Pathologists. 
 

Mr Jean-Luc Eiselé PhD

Jean-Luc Eiselé is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Heart Federation (WHF), a global heart health authority based in Geneva, Switzerland. He has worked in the field of medical association management for almost 20 years. Mr. Eiselé was trained as a biochemist at the Biozentrum in Basel and the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

 

In 1999, he joined the European Respiratory Society as Scientific Affairs Manager, and in 2007 became Executive Director. In 2011, Jean-Luc Eiselé was appointed Executive Director of the FDI World Dental Federation, where he developed advocacy work at the global level with the World Health Organization and successfully launched World Oral Health Day.

Since his appointment as CEO of WHF in 2017, Jean-Luc Eiselé has strengthened the business model of the Federation and enhanced membership engagement. The WHF is an umbrella organization that represents the global cardiovascular community by uniting patient, medical, and scientific groups. The organization influences policies and shares knowledge to promote cardiovascular health for everyone. It connects the cardiovascular community, translates science into policy, and promotes the exchange of information and knowledge to achieve heart health for everyone.

Dr Pankaj Gupta (MSc, MDFRCP, FRCPath), is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Leicester and Hon. Consultant Metabolic Physician and Chemical Pathologist, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He heads the Lipid Clinic and also runs the Hypertension Clinic (European Centre of Excellence).    
  
He is an executive member of the British and Irish Hypertension Society, member of the European Society of Hypertension Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and Adherence and co-Director of the National Centre of Adherence Testing (NCAT  
  
His main area of research is on non-adherence. He has more than 30 publications in the area along with two book chapters. He has an h-index of 19 (google scholar) and has received more than £2000,000 in grant funding.

 

 

 

Professor Steve Humphries PhD

Steve Humphries is a world-renowned expert in cardiovascular genetics, a field in which he has worked for over 40 years.   He worked at University College London from 1991, where he was the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics, retiring in September 2015 and is the BHF UCL Emeritus Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics.

 

Professor Humphries has an h index of >110 and has published over 770 papers and more than 230 review articles and has supervised 39 PhD and 8 MD thesis students.  He directed a major research programme to develop and implement molecular strategies to study the causes and clinical and psychological consequences of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH). He was the Lead Advisor to the UK NICE guidelines on FH published in 2008, and updated in 2017, and has published on the health economics of cascade testing and Universal Screening for FH. He serves on the Cholesterol and FH Expert Advisory Group is the the Director of the UK FH Paediatric Register and the Simon Broome FH Register. He is actively involved with teaching, ethics, and public awareness aspects of the implementation of genetic testing for FH.

Professor Kornelia Kotseva

Professor Kornelia Kotseva holds a position as Consultant Cardiologist at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, UK, and an appointment at the National Institute for Prevention and Cardiovascular Health, National University of Galway, Ireland. Prior to this she had academic appointments at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London, UK and at the Department of Public Health, Ghent University, Belgium.

 

She was a Chair of the Steering Committee of the ESC EUROASPIRE IV and V surveys, aiming to describe the risk factor management in patients with coronary disease and in people at high cardiovascular risk in Europe.  Furthermore, she was a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of several other European and UK studies: EUROASPIRE III Health Economics, ASPIRE-2-PREVENT, ASPIRE-3-PREVENT, EUROACTION, EUROACTION PLUS, the productivity losses and indirect costs after cardiovascular events in Europe, the Heart Quality of Life (HeartQoL) and other studies. She was an expert panel member of the WHF Roadmap programme of the cardiovascular disease prevention among people with diabetes, the Euro Heart Index and the EU funded EConDA project on cost-effectiveness for chronic diseases. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the INTERASPIRE survey in six WHO regions and the forthcoming ESC EUROASPIRE VI survey.

 

Her main research and clinical interest is the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. 

Dr Antonio de Marvao

Dr Antonio de Marvao is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Women and Children’s Health and in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences at King's College London. Clinically, he works as a Consultant Cardiologist, specialising in Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC), and as an Obstetric Physician, with a special interest in Maternal Cardiology and Hypertension in Pregnancy. His clinics are at St Thomas' and King's College Hospitals. 
 
Antonio graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2007 and went on to complete his Foundation training in Scotland. In 2009 he moved to London, where he undertook his core medical training across Hammersmith, Charing Cross and St. Mary’s hospitals. Antonio was appointed to specialty training in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine in 2011 and in 2012 awarded an MRC Chain-Florey Clinical Research Fellowship to undertake a PhD. His early training in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital was complemented by advanced fellowships in Cardiac CT, CMR and Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Between 2016 and 2021 he was an MRC Chain-Florey Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at Imperial College London. Antonio completed his dual training with a senior fellowship in Obstetric Medicine at St Thomas' Hospital in 2021/22. During his training, Antonio developed a clinical and academic interested in Maternal Cardiology, particularly in the management of hypertensive disorders, heart failure and cardiomyopathies during pregnancy.

Elphee Medici is a dietitian and nutrition expert with over 30 years’ experience working in the NHS, industry and freelancing.  She advises on all matters relating to nutrition, health and sustainability.  Core skills include critiquing scientific research, interpreting findings in context of practical implications, and authorship of various evidence-based reports on topics such as heart health, sustainability, bone health, vitamin D, soya and plant-based diets. 

 

She is currently consulting with HEART UK on various projects relating to diet and cholesterol management including updating the Nutrition Academy pages with the latest evidence behind diet and nutrition as well as working closely with the team to produce the latest Diet Quizzes - the unique online tool to help consumers and health professionals assess the dietary quality, provide tailored practical and realistic advice and nudge individuals to regularly review their diet.

Riyaz Patel is a Professor of Cardiology at University College London and a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Health and UCLH NHS Trusts. He graduated in medicine from King’s College London in 2001 and completed general medical and specialist cardiology training in centres across London and in Atlanta, USA.   
 
He is an active clinician scientist, having held fellowships from the National Institute of Health Research, British Heart Foundation and American Heart Association. His research focusses on better understanding coronary heart disease using data science approaches, with expertise in epidemiology, cardiovascular risk, informatics and genetics, leading a global consortium in this area (GENIUS-CHD).  
 
Prof. Patel is also a practising cardiologist, and an expert in lipids and CVD prevention, leading regional preventative cardiology services, advising on NICE and European guidelines, and steering strategic initiatives for NHS England to shape the priorities for CVD health across London. 

 

Prof. Kazem Rahimi

Kazem Rahimi is a Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Population Health, at the University of Oxford and a consultant cardiologist at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. His research interests include hypertension, heart failure, multimorbidity and cardiovascular risk management, using a variety of methodologies such as individual-patient meta-analysis, large-scale decentralised clinical trials, and digital health technologies. 

 

Kazem leads the Deep Medicine programme at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health with a major interest in application of machine learning approaches to electronic health records. He also leads the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration (BPLTTC), which is an international collaboration of all the major trials of blood pressure-lowering drugs. He is the Director of the Martin School programme on Informal Cities.

 

Dr Alan Thomas Remaley

Dr. Remaley received his B.S. in Biochemistry and Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981.  He received in 1987 a M.D. and Ph.D. (Biochemistry) degree from the University of Pittsburgh.  He completed in 1990 a residency in Clinical Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and became board certified in Clinical Pathology in 1992.  He joined the National Institutes of Health in 1990, as a medical staff fellow, and did a postdoctoral fellowship on lipoprotein metabolism at the Molecular Disease Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.  He became in 1995 a senior staff member of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, where he directs the Immunoassay and HPLC/Mass Spectrometry laboratories.  As of 2005, he became the section chief of the Lipoprotein Metabolism Laboratory at NHLBI.  He is the author of over 500 publications, mostly in the fields of lipoprotein metabolism and clinical pathology.

Prof Jeanine Roetes van Lennep

Jeanine Roeters van Lennep works as internist vascular medicine at the Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She is an associate professor and head of the Erasmus MC lipid clinic specialised in hereditary dyslipidemia which has a family-based approach treating both children and adults. The Erasmus MC is recognized as a leading centre for treatment of dyslipidemia especially Familial Hypercholesterolesterolemia (FH) and expert centre for rare dyslipidemias including homozygous FH and familial chylomicronemia syndrome. 
 
She also founded a multidisciplinary long-term follow-up cardiovascular prevention program for women who had preeclampsia. 
 
Her scientific research is dedicated to cardiovascular prevention in high-risk populations. Her special focus is to take into account the life course of women which has unique features such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause. She received grants for her research by the Dutch Heart Foundation and the Dutch Research Council  
 
Jeanine has broad leadership experience as board member of various scientific societies. She is the past-chair of the Dutch Society of Vascular Medicine, member of the Executive Committee of the European Atherosclerosis Society and member of the scientific advisory board of the Dutch Heart foundation. Moreover, she has been chair of the first Dutch Guideline on Dyslipidemia. 

Prof Handrean Soran

Prof Handrean Soran is Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist. He has a specialist interest in lipidology, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular risk, parathyroid, calcium and bone metabolism. He provides a tertiary centre service for lipoprotein disorders, as well as calcium and metabolic bone diseases. His research work is focused on cardiovascular risk, lipoproteins properties and functionality, lipoproteins and neuropathy, micro- and macro-vascular complications of diabetes & obesity and the effect of metabolic surgery and pharmacological agents on these complications. Professor Soran is on the editorial board of Atherosclerosis Journal. He authored more than 215 peer reviewed publications and several book chapters.  
 
Prof Soran leads cardiovascular trials team at Manchester University Hospital NHS Trust and Lipoprotein Research Team at University of Manchester, UK. He acted as the UK chief investigator for more than 20 multi-center clinical trials and studies and principal investigator for more than 50 multi-centre clinical trials and studies. He also acted as a member of the steering committee of several large multinational randomised control trials.  
 
 He successfully supervised ten MD and PhD students and one MSc student. Professor Soran Leads Manchester Endocrinology and Diabetes Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) course which attracts many national and international delegates. He also organises annual Lipid and Atherosclerosis Forum and Northwest Endocrinology and Cardiovascular update symposium.  
      
Prof Soran is the Chair of HEART UK’s medical, scientific and research committee, leads the UK FCS register, UK HoFH register, and the FCS international Project (FCS-IP) and he is a member of UK’s lipoprotein apheresis committee, European Atherosclerosis Society’s Familial Hypercholesterolemia Collaborative Study (FHSC) executive committee and a EUROASPIRE VI study UK steering committee. He served as the co-chair of the National Familial Hypercholesterolemia task force in UK and President of the Lipid, Metabolism and Vascular Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. 

 

Mr Simon Tapley

Simon qualified as a dietitian in 2011 and has worked in Barnsley, Weston Super Mare, Cardiff and Bristol since. Previously Simon specialized in Gastroenterology and Neurology until 2019. Since 2020 Simon has specialized in Inherited Metabolic Disorders and has not looked back. Simon is excited to be at HEART UK this year!

 

Prof Gerald Francis Watts

Gerald Watts trained at Imperial and King’s College, London University. He practices cardiometabolic and general medicine as a senior consultant physician and chairs the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Australasia Network.

 

He leads the Cardiometabolic Service in the Departments of Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Royal Perth Hospital and is Winthrop Professor of Cardiometabolic Medicine in the University of Western Australia. Research interests include fundamental and applied aspects of lipid disorders and cardiovascular prevention, improving healthcare delivery for patients with high-risk dyslipidaemias, and implementation science and practice.

 

He has supervised several Masters, MD and PhD students and post-doctoral research fellows. He holds several research grants, with multiple international collaborations. Professor Watts has published over 800 articles and other works and is a highly cited. He is on the editorial board of several journals, including Atherosclerosis, Metabolism, Journal of Clinical Lipidology, American Journal of Preventative Cardiology, Current Opinion in Lipidology, and Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity.
