Because it offers a smooth and responsive gameplay experience, 60Hz is still the rate that most folks use with PC gaming. When you throw in 4K resolution, however, 60Hz can prove to be a challenge for some graphics cards. It's in these type of situations where FreeSync comes in.

First announced in 2014, FreeSync is AMD's adaptive sync technology that supports dynamic refresh rates. In doing so, it helps to reduce screen tearing and stuttering in content that can occur with graphics cards during heavy loads.

FreeSync 2, first announced in 2017, removed the minimum frame rate and set a maximum on-screen latency. It also doubled the color volume with support for wide color gamut color spaces and increased display brightness.

FreeSync is only meant for AMD's own graphics cards. If you've got an NVIDIA graphics card, there's a competing technology called G-Sync. Also, FreeSync is only available when it is connected to Display Port. In other words, if you aren't willing to drop some cash on an AMD graphics card, there's no reason to turn FreeSync on.

AMD has some affordable choices, like the basic Radeon Pulse RX 550, but there are plenty of options.
